Emergency Medical Technician - Fire Department
Job Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class provides medical treatment at the scene of accidents or illnesses. Responsibilities include analyzing and taking command of patient care, working rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, and handling hazardous situations and emotionally traumatic events. Physical demands include strenuous physical activity such as lifting, climbing, and bending.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
- Must be 18 years of age and a United States Citizen or a Resident Alien.
- Valid Maryland Class C Non-Commercial driver's license or equivalent license, and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City’s driver’s permit.
- Current Basic Life Support Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians; or Current Certification as a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or equivalent, from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).
- Must upload a copy of your valid driver’s license with application.
Physical and Medical Standards
- Candidates must pass a physical ability test as required by the City of Baltimore.
- Hired after January 1, 2010, must meet NFPA Standard 1582, including tobacco-free upon appointment and throughout their length of service in the Baltimore City Fire Department.
- Must obtain and maintain Maryland Fire Service Professional Qualification Board Firefighter I certification, Responders to Hazardous Material Operations certification, and successfully complete an AHA’s CPR for the Healthcare Provider course, MFRI’s EVOC and Defensive Driving Course, and any additional educational courses and skills competency evaluations required by MIEMSS, MFRI, and BCFD.
- Employees must maintain these licenses and certifications in all the above as a condition of employment.
Background Check
Candidates under final consideration for appointment will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information and to submit and pass drug and alcohol tests.
Probation
All people, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory one-year probation. Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months.
Education Accreditation
Applicants' education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
