About the role
This position offers both full-time and part-time opportunities for EMTs. Full-time employees may work 12 or 24-hour shifts, including BLS and ALS ambulance duties. Part-time positions are non-benefitted.
Responsibilities
- Safely respond to fire, medical, and other emergency calls with an emergency response team.
- Perform emergency medical patient assessment and treatment as indicated and necessary in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Treatment Protocol/Policies for EMT level care.
- Provide emergency medical care as needed on ALS fire companies and on the ALS ambulance, and assist in the maintenance and replenishment of medical equipment, medication, and supplies.
- Maintain records and prepare written reports.
- Obtain the required certifications to drive and operate staff vehicles and ambulances as required.
- Aid in the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, fire stations, and grounds.
- Attend drills, training, and conferences.
- Learn fire department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and techniques.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have valid California EMT-B certification with accreditation in San Diego County at the time of hire, which must be maintained for the duration of their assignment.
- Must have a CA Class C Driver’s License.
- Must have an ambulance driver’s certificate at time of hire.
- Must have AHA, BLS, CPR certification or equivalent.
Qualifications
- Minimum three-months paid work experience as an EMT on an ambulance or first responder assessment company.
- Employment experience working as an EMT on a Santee-Lakeside Emergency Medical Services (SLEMSA) transport unit.
- Any combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates a professional desire to work as a firefighter/paramedic.
- Completion of a paramedic preparatory class through a recognized paramedic training program.
- Paramedic certification.
Skills
- Knowledge of safe working practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of San Diego County pre-hospital EMT policy, procedures, and protocols.
- Ability to appropriately document workplace activities using computers and electronic devices.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Knowledge of emergency medical treatment and CPR techniques.
- Ability to follow orders and directions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, emergency medical patients, hospital staff, the public, and members of other agencies.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to interpret and make effective decisions by correctly applying policies, procedures, and technical knowledge in an emergency.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work in stressful conditions.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles.
- Ability to manage multiple patient medical scenes.
- Ability to physically perform the full range of duties of this classification.
