About the Role
Performs direct patient care including assessment, evaluation, and basic life support according to the goals of Mercy Health System, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, Standard of Care, and Employee Code of Conduct. EMT-Is may also perform clerical, dispatch, and maintenance duties as required.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, including assessment and evaluation
- Perform basic life support
- Operate and maintain emergency medical equipment
- Perform clerical, dispatch, and maintenance duties as required
- Respond to emergency calls and transport patients
- Work in various environmental conditions, including damaged vehicles and difficult terrain
- Lift and move patients and equipment with a partner
- Perform strenuous physical activities such as CPR
Requirements
- EMT license for the state where employed
- Valid driver’s license
- At least 19 years of age to operate Mercy EMS vehicles
- Hazmat Awareness certification
- BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications (within 90 days of hire)
- Ability to work differing shifts and schedules
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Unimpaired mobility to respond quickly to emergencies and access patients in difficult terrain
- Ability to climb stairs and work in close, dangerous environments
- Capable of performing strenuous physical tasks, including CPR and lifting/moving patients and equipment
- Correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles
- Color acuity sufficient for determining skin and blood color and reading medication dosages
- Ability to hear and understand information from patients, family, or bystanders in distracting environments
- Ability to differentiate radio traffic while responding with lights and sirens
- Clear verbal communication in loud and stressful conditions
Incumbents must successfully satisfy the physical demands of the role, including a pre-hire and annual fitness-for-duty test.

- Variety of bags and kits
- Assigned ambulance

Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- ITLS or equivalent training
