About the role
Provides basic level pre-hospital emergency medical care as defined in NJAC 8:40. Under direction, drives or rides an ambulance to specific locations to provide emergency medical assessment and treatment, including non-emergency interfacility transportation.
Responsibilities
- Performs daily equipment, vehicle, and radio checks to ensure all equipment is present and operational.
- Drives ambulance while adhering to all NJ Title 39 Motor Vehicle Codes and Regulations.
- Assesses the nature and extent of injuries and establishes priorities for emergency care and transportation needs.
- Administers emergency care such as opening and maintaining an airway, providing positive pressure ventilation, and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Treats bleeding, shock, fractures, and poisoning and burns.
- Safely moves patients using lifting and moving devices.
- Radios the dispatcher for additional resources as needed.
- Prepares patients for transport to the hospital or other facilities.
- Carefully monitors patients en route to the hospital.
- Delivers newborn infants upon request.
- Transfers patients to the emergency department (ED) stretcher upon arrival.
- Completes patient care reports and logs trip details.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent experience.
- Emergency driving certification such as CEVO or EVOC.
- Completion of ICS 100, Haz-Mat, and WMD Awareness courses.
- EMT - Emergency Medical Tech Certification and BCLS - Basic Life Support.
- A trauma course such as PHTLS or BTLS.
- Valid NJ Driver’s License.
Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal and team skills.
- Ability to remain calm and think clearly under stress.
Skills
- Principles of basic level emergency medical and first aid treatment.
- Techniques for administering pulmonary and cardiac resuscitation.
- Techniques for administering oxygen.
- Use of various electronic and manual recording and information systems.
