The Emergency Management Intern supports the City of Baytown’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in planning, coordination, and operational preparedness efforts. This position provides hands-on experience in emergency management through involvement in real-world projects, including planning document updates, resource tracking, data management, and training exercises. The intern works collaboratively with City departments and external partners to support preparedness initiatives, enhance coordination, and ensure critical information is accurate and accessible for decision-making during emergencies and planned events.

- Reviews and updates emergency plans, annexes, and standard operating procedures
- Develops, coordinates, and evaluates emergency management training and exercises
- Supports Emergency Management GIS mapping tool development and data management
- Aids in hazardous materials data collection, organization, and mapping for planning and safety purposes
- Assists the Emergency Management staff in various roles and special projects
- Supports documentation, reporting, and after-action reviews
- Attends interagency meetings and coordination meetings
- Supports outreach activities and events involving public, private, and regional partners
- Performs other duties as assigned
Responsibilities
- Provides administrative and project support for emergency management efforts
- Assists with inventory management, including tracking resources, supplies, and equipment for emergency operations
- Supports the review and update of emergency plans, annexes, and standard operating procedures
- Affixes in the development, coordination, and evaluation of emergency management training and exercises
- Aids in the development of the Emergency Management GIS mapping tool and data management
- Aids in hazardous materials data collection, organization, and mapping for planning and safety purposes
- Assists the Emergency Management staff in a variety of roles and special projects
- Supports documentation, reporting, and after-action reviews to identify areas for improvement
- Attends interagency meetings to gain exposure to emergency management operations
- Supports outreach activities and events involving public, private, and regional partners
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Completion of at least two (2) years of college coursework or 36 credit hours
- Currently pursuing a degree or certificate program in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Political Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field
- Ability to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week during normal business hours

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion
- Knowledge of basic emergency management principles and practices is preferred
- Ability to research, analyze, and organize data effectively with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and operational needs
