About the role
The Emergency Financial Representative ensures reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or other responsible parties, assists patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage, collects up-front POS collections, sets up financial arrangements, and assists patients in accessing programs like Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.
Responsibilities
- Assists patients in understanding their health care insurance coverage
- Ensures reimbursement to PIH Health from patients or other responsible parties
- Collects up-front POS collections
- Establishes payment arrangements for self-pay and high liability accounts
- Assists patients in accessing programs like Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility
- Facilitates eligibility for Hospital Presumptive Eligibility qualifications when necessary
- Performs medical screening exams before interacting with patients
- Enhances registration and financial counseling skills
- Completes comprehensive training program and certification as required
- Maintains customer service standards, including non-violent crisis intervention (NCI) certification
Requirements
- Clear understanding of PIH Health mission and values
- Experience working directly with insurance companies, healthcare providers, and patients
- Experience generating revenue through POS collections, establishing payment arrangements, and collecting on self-pay and high liability accounts
- Knowledge of EMTALA and experience with it
- Attention to detail and follow-up processes
- Effective communication and tactfulness with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies
- Excellent English reading, comprehension, and written skills, including spelling and penmanship
- Strong mathematical skills for calculating copays and financial estimates
- Ability to type 45+ words per minute and use MS office programs
- Organizational skills to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Independent judgment and decision-making abilities
- Bilingual proficiency preferred
- Interacts with all levels of hospital and outside vendor staff
- Knowledge of government regulations and privacy policies
- Experience in front office/medical billing, hospital registration/admitting, insurance verification, and medical/hospital billing
- High school diploma or equivalent, with preference for continuing education in finance, accounting, or business administration
- Knowledge of eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program, Medicare, Covered California, Cobra, limited benefit plans, VVC, and Uncompensated Care Programs
- Experience with IPA knowledge and medical terminology
- Excellent communication skills
- Flexibility to adapt to changes and problemsolving abilities
Qualifications
- Two years of experience in front office/medical billing and/or hospital registration/admitting
- Two years of experience in insurance verification and/or medical/hospital billing
- High school diploma or equivalent, with preference for continuing education in finance, accounting, or business administration
- Knowledge of eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program, Medicare, Covered California, Cobra, limited benefit plans, VVC, and Uncompensated Care Programs
- Experience with IPA knowledge and medical terminology
