About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and direct supervision of the Director of Emergency Department, Assistant Nurse Manager, or charge nurse, the Emergency Room Technician (RN or LPN) performs direct patient care for an assigned number of patients. Patient assignments are determined by emergency department patient census and current staffing levels, reviewed shift-to-shift. The ED Tech may be assigned up to 40 hours per week and may rotate between day, night shifts, and weekends based on unit needs.

The ED Tech is expected to function within the scope of practice and approved policies, procedures, and regulations for the department and organization. The role requires the ability to cope with frequent unpleasant sights and smells, as well as difficult patient and family interactions.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Charge Nurse, RN, or LPN with orientation, preceptorship for ED Nurse Techs, students, or Unit Secretaries assigned to the unit.
• Work and relate professionally with peers, physicians, mid-level providers, administration, patients, and visitors.
• Collect selected patient information and perform emergency patient care as directed by RN/LPN.
• Document care given, assist with review and maintenance of patient charts per policy, and ensure accurate and timely entry of patient data, orders, or charges into the computer system.
• Monitor and re-assess patients' vital signs in triage or treatment areas as directed by RN/LPN.
• Identify patients' needs or concerns and communicate them to RN/LPN or providers for patient safety and satisfaction.
• Maintain clinical competence to perform duties within the scope of ED Tech competencies, including providing care during procedures.
• Promote unit and organizational philosophy and goals; participate in the development of unit goals.
• Support and assist with staffing and scheduling policies to meet unit needs.
• Assist in establishing departmental policies and procedures that reflect emergency department services.
• Participate in organizational committees as assigned.
• Provide information on trends related to patient outcomes to the ED Director, Assistant Manager, Charge Nurse, or RN/LPN.
• Maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements: EMTALA, DNV, and CMS.
• Demonstrate professionalism and reinforce professional behavior among staff members.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skill related to patient throughput and customer service/satisfaction.
• Monitor ED census with emphasis on patient throughput and address patient concerns.
• Complete yearly mandatory in-service (YMI) requirements and remain current on Healthstream assignments.
• Assist RN in collecting data for assessment to formulate a plan of care.
• Prioritize patient care based on needs identified during assessment.
• Communicate patient needs to other disciplines and promote discharge planning.
• Assist in assessing, monitoring, and managing patients in clinical, chronic, urgent, or emergent situations.
• Demonstrate and deliver patient-centered care as a patient advocate.

• Must function within the ED Tech scope of practice, skill competencies, and approved policies and procedures.

Schedule

May rotate between day, night shifts, and weekends according to the needs of the unit and staffing levels.
