Emergency Department Technician

About the Role

This position is responsible for providing patient care and assisting health care providers in performing assigned patient procedures within scope of training. The role receives general supervision from RN, APN, PA, or Physician in providing patient care.

Located in Susanville in northeast California, Banner Lassen Medical Center offers comprehensive care in a state-of-the-art facility. Susanville is nestled within the Sierra Nevada Mountains, offering four seasons with year-round recreational opportunities such as hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, hunting, camping, and off-road activities.

Banner Lassen Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital with a proud history of providing vital care to the community since 1883. The facility is equipped with the latest medical technology, including a 124-slice CT scanner, nuclear medicine, MRI, ultrasound, bone density, and mammography. Additional services include infusion, respiratory therapy, cardiopulmonary services, laboratory services, inpatient and outpatient surgery, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Responsibilities

• Perform assigned procedures under general supervision, including electrocardiogram testing (EKG), wound cleansing, vital sign measurements, application of monitor leads, specimen collection, and patient transport.
• Perform advanced skills where state statute permits, such as blood glucose testing, phlebotomy, saline lock insertion, IV discontinuation, and bladder (Foley) catheterization for patients twelve years of age and older.
• Set up, prepare patients, and assist with exams and minor surgical or health procedures, including lumbar punctures, sterile instrument preparation, suturing lacerations, chest tube insertion, closed fracture reduction, gastric lavage, pelvic examinations, restraint application, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Apply orthopedic devices, including pre-manufactured and plaster splints under physician direction.
• Perform specimen collection and point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose, hemoccult, gastroccult) while ensuring accuracy and integrity.
• Communicate updates to RN, Physician, or other providers regarding patient condition changes.
• Accurately document information in patient records, including vital signs, procedures, and equipment used.
• Monitor and maintain supply stock levels, medication rooms, exam rooms, and specialty carts.
• Assist with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
• Attend department meetings and educational sessions; assist in orienting and training new ED Technicians.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure/certification, or Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of practice (required for new hires and transfers). In Colorado: EMT-B or higher with state licensure/certification.
• Basic computer skills, effective communication (written and verbal), and problem-solving ability.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Pay

Estimated pay range: $24.17 - $31.43 per hour. Banner Health is committed to pay equity and transparency.
