Emergency Department Technician

About the Role

This position is a Full-Time ED Tech role within the Emergency Department at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. The schedule is 3 shifts per week from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM, including weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. Employees have access to a self-scheduling tool for shift and weekend coverage, a $1/hour weekend shift differential, and an 18% night shift differential where applicable.

Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is an 890,000-square-foot acute-care facility designated as a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and a Certified Stroke Center. Responsibilities

• Perform assigned patient care procedures under general supervision, including electrocardiogram testing (EKG), wound cleansing, vital sign measurements, application of monitor leads, specimen collection, and patient transport.
• Perform advanced skills (where state statute permits), such as blood glucose testing, phlebotomy, saline lock insertion, IV discontinuation, and bladder (Foley) catheterization for patients twelve years and older.
• Set up, prepare patients, and assist with exams and minor surgical or health procedures, including lumbar punctures, sterile field preparation, suturing lacerations, chest tube insertion, closed fracture reduction, gastric lavage, pelvic examinations, restraint application, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Apply orthopedic devices, including pre-manufactured and plaster splints, under physician direction.
• Perform specimen collection and point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose, hemoccult, gastroccult) while ensuring accuracy and quality control.
• Communicate patient condition updates to RNs, physicians, or other providers.
• Accurately document patient information, vital signs, and procedures in the patient record.
• Monitor and maintain supply stock levels, including medication rooms, exam rooms, and specialty carts.
• Coordinate with housekeeping, maintenance, and biomedical engineering to ensure a safe environment.
• Assist with health unit coordination tasks, reception responsibilities, and the orientation/training of new ED Technicians.
• Attend department meetings and educational sessions.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure/certification, or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the state of practice (required for new hires and transfers). In Colorado: EMT-B or higher with state licensure/certification.
• Basic computer skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, and problem-solving ability.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional related education and/or experience is preferred.

Schedule

• Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential.
