Emergency Department Tech - Part-Time 7pm-7:30am Monday thru Friday & every other weekend

Location: Grand Blanc, Michigan – Henry Ford Health Genesys Hospital, Emergency Department

Schedule: Part-time, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM Monday through Friday and every other weekend

About the Role

Performs a variety of patient-related duties in accordance with established policies and procedures in the Nursing Department, under the general supervision of a registered nurse. Duties may include, but are not limited to: patient care procedures such as patient hygiene, CPR, basic transport, vital signs (including peak flows and pulse oximetry), specimen collection, phlebotomy, EKGs, postmortem care, simple orthopedic procedures, and instructing patients on the proper use of orthopedic equipment and supplies. Ensures emergency and other equipment is functional and safe through operational checks, stocks and maintains supplies, and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care to the age groups served.

Responsibilities

• Assists professional nurse with medical screening of incoming emergency patients
• Obtains and documents patient's vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and temperature; verbally reports any changes or abnormalities to the RN; obtains vital signs for infants, children, and adults
• Observes patient condition and reports immediately any untoward signs, symptoms, or unusual occurrences
• Obtains specimens as ordered; labels specimens and sends them to the laboratory; applies pediatric urine isolation devices
• Provides assistance when requested or as indicated in transporting infants, children, or adult patients, or in transferring patients to/from carts, wheelchairs, or automobiles
• Performs EKGs as directed; provides report to RN and/or ED physician immediately for evaluation
• Applies cardiac monitor electrodes to patients and operates cardiac monitors; identifies life-threatening arrhythmias and initiates Basic Life Support for both adults and children
• Assists with patient care for any life- or limb-threatening emergency patients, as directed by RN
• Assists RN with pediatric procedures including immobilizing (sheet mummy), weight, and spinal taps
• Monitors and reports to RN the presence, location, and intensity of patients' pain using appropriate assessment tools
• Promotes a safe environment for patients and self; identifies and reports high-risk patients to RN; implements appropriate safety measures, assists RN in utilizing restraint alternatives and/or restraints; observes patients in restraints for comfort and safety; ensures restraints are not restrictive to extremities; offers food, fluid, and toiletry opportunities per policy
• Assembles equipment and assists the physician; differentiates and selects appropriate type and/or size of equipment/supplies for patient age and/or developmental status
• Assists with patient ambulation as indicated; performs other patient-related duties as required by RN/ED physician; completes special unit jobs in a timely manner, including cleaning and returning equipment, inspecting and caring for supplies, restocking unit cabinets, and assisting with room turnover
• Participates in mandatory in-services, continuing education, and relevant meetings to maintain and improve understanding of present and future trends in healthcare; participates in unit problem-solving and maintains competency requirements
• Works effectively with others; assists in orientation of new personnel as requested; assists with documentation on clinical records and monitor sheets; adheres to standards of practice, policy, procedure, and clinical practice guidelines
• Participates in Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement activities as directed by Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing, including chart review, safety, universal precautions, and others as assigned; maintains professional working relationships with external emergency agencies

Requirements

• Certified BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 3 months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date
• Licensed Emergency Medical Tech credentialed from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)
• Advanced licensure preferred
• Knowledge of human biology, patient care procedures, BLS, medical equipment, and medical terminology at a level acquired through completion of an accredited emergency medical technician program
• Six months of related medical experience with the ability to verbally demonstrate the proficiency and knowledge necessary to meet the requirements of the position

Essential Functions

• Ability to work and stand for long periods of time, lift, position, and transport patients and equipment; manual dexterity necessary to adjust, assemble, and utilize equipment
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact effectively with patients and families in a courteous, tactful manner

Working Conditions

Ability to work in a patient care environment with moderate exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature variations, frequent exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous wastes, and moderately adverse working conditions while performing patient care activities.

Orientation Requirements

Must attend Medical Center new hire and department orientations.
