About the role

The State of Connecticut, Department of Administrative Services (DAS), is seeking Elevator Inspector positions within the Office of the State Building Inspector. Our team ensures compliance with the State Building Code, State Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, and State Safety Code for Boilers and Hot Water Heaters.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction, installation, alteration and operation of existing elevators, escalators, and ski lifts.
  • Witness full load safety and hydraulic pressure tests on elevators.
  • Investigate accidents and complaints involving lifting devices.
  • Inspect and recommend shutdown of lifting devices due to code safety violations and unsafe conditions.
  • Review new construction scope of work plans.
  • Conduct new acceptance inspections on newly installed elevators.
  • Testify at hearings and in court.
  • Gather information and write reports.
  • Review blueprints.
  • Respond to questions from architects, engineers, consultants, building owners, managers, elevator contractors, and the public regarding various building and engineering codes.
  • Participate in building job code meetings with contractors.
  • Collect overdue fees for elevator operating certificates.
  • Assist in training of new Elevator Inspectors.
  • Inspect amusement parks and carnival rides.
  • Assist in the development of seminars on code standards.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

To be considered, applicants must hold an active Unlimited Elevator Journeyperson license from the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.

Qualifications

Incumbents in this class must possess at the time of employment and maintain during employment a license as an Unlimited Elevator Journeyperson from the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.

Skills

Knowledge of standard methods and materials used in construction and operation of lifting devices; signal systems, installation drawings and wiring diagrams; relevant state laws, regulations and various engineering and building codes; inspection and investigation methods and techniques; electrical welding and building disciplines; and ability to operate microprocessor control equipment and all other relevant technical devices affecting and controlling operation of lifting devices.
