Elementary Teaching and Learning Specialist TOSA

About the Role

The Elementary Teaching and Learning Specialist provides instructional support for the elementary Instructional Coaching program in Lake Washington School District. This position strengthens the knowledge, skills, and impact of building-based Instructional Coaches to improve teaching and learning across the district. A primary focus is developing coaches' expertise in evidence-based literacy instruction and supporting the successful implementation of the district's elementary literacy resources through high-quality, job-embedded coaching.

The role facilitates and coordinates collaboration across departments, programs, schools, and district leaders to ensure a comprehensive, coherent approach to professional learning and instructional improvement. It includes designing and facilitating ongoing professional learning for Instructional Coaches, supporting content-specific pedagogy, collaborative inquiry, and examining problems of practice. The specialist also provides meta-coaching to strengthen coaches' ability to partner with teachers, use evidence of student learning to inform coaching, and improve instructional practice.

The Elementary Teaching and Learning Specialist helps oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the elementary Instructional Coaching program, including onboarding new coaches, coordinating program operations, monitoring implementation, and using multiple sources of data to evaluate program effectiveness. The specialist reports to the Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning and works collaboratively with other district and building leaders to ensure coaching is aligned, responsive to school needs, and focused on improving student outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Strengthen the knowledge, skills, and impact of building-based Instructional Coaches.
• Develop coaches' expertise in evidence-based literacy instruction.
• Support the implementation of the district's elementary literacy resources through job-embedded coaching.
• Facilitate and coordinate collaboration across departments, programs, schools, and district leaders.
• Design and facilitate ongoing professional learning for Instructional Coaches.
• Support content-specific pedagogy, collaborative inquiry, and examination of problems of practice.
• Provide meta-coaching to enhance coaches' ability to partner with teachers and use evidence of student learning.
• Oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the elementary Instructional Coaching program.
• Onboard new coaches, coordinate program operations, monitor implementation, and evaluate program effectiveness using multiple data sources.
• Work collaboratively with district and building leaders to align coaching with school needs and improve student outcomes.

Requirements

• Related Bachelor's Degree.
• Five or more years of teaching experience.
• Two or more years of experience providing coaching to educators.
• Experience leading professional development.
• Experience partnering with administrators and educators to shift instructional practices.

Qualifications

• Extensive knowledge of coaching skills and strategies.
• Exemplary written and oral communication.
• Experience leading professional learning for adult learners.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Application of critical, metacognitive, and reflective thinking.

Work Environment

Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The role is performed indoors under minimal temperature changes in a generally hazard-free environment. Physical demands include:

• Frequent reaching, handling, fingering, and/or feeling.
• Seldom lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
• Seldom climbing and balancing.
• Seldom stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.

Pay

Paid per teacher salary schedule, plus 21 extra days and a stipend contract. Tier 1 compensation package as outlined in Appendix N - TOSA Matrix of the LWSD LWEA Contract 2023-2027. Additional Technology stipend and Professional Fund available. Refer to the LWEA salary schedule for details.
