Requirements
- Master's degree in counseling from an approved school counselor preparation program.
- Valid South Dakota School Counselor Certificate.
- Previous experience in an elementary school setting (desired).
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and work collaboratively with teams.
- Completion of at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years (required by South Dakota Codified Law 13-42-71). Approved trainings and instructions.
Responsibilities
- Provide counseling to individuals and small groups with personal concerns.
- Consult with teachers, staff, parents, and stakeholders regarding student developmental needs.
- Participate in building problem-solving team meetings and support a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTMDSS) model.
- Coordinate and implement elementary counseling curriculum in the classroom.
- Monitor and communicate student progress with parents.
- Maintain confidentiality of students and their families.
- Refer students with significant challenges to appropriate community resources in consultation with parents.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise the building counseling program.
- Coordinate and conduct activities contributing to the elementary counseling plan.
- Build interpersonal relationships and establish positive rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, and parents.
- Pursue professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Pay
Starting at $53,981 to $60,793 per year, based on experience. View the complete salary schedule.
Pay Day: Last working day of each month.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with a 30-minute duty-free lunch.
- 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week, 9 months.
