Electronics Research and Development Engineer
Position Specifics
We are searching for a highly motivated and experienced Electronics Research and Development Engineer to join the Embedded Systems team of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. Our mission is to develop systems that integrate embedded hardware and software applications to capture data from complex systems to provide system analytics and automated control at the edge device. This role will span many disciplines including sensing, acoustics, signal processing, power electronics, communications and networking. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the development of embedded system hardware and software in the areas of sensing, robotics, and power electronics
- Participate in the specification of system requirements, and hardware software architecture design
- Design analog and digital electronic circuits and circuit boards
- Assist in the development of new projects and proposals
- Assist in the management of embedded system design and development tasks and projects
Additional Responsibilities for Higher-Level Position
- Linux and Embedded Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
- FPGA Design, Development, Testing, and Verification
- Schematic Capture and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design using Altium Designer
- High-Speed, High-Layer Count PCB Design, including BGA Components, Stack-Up Development, and Transmission Line Design
- Microcontroller (MCU) Interface Protocols, including SPI, I2S, USB, and Ethernet
Required Skills and Experience
- Embedded software design using C in both a RTOS and bare metal environment
- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking principles and embedded stacks
- Mixed Signal Design
- Analog to digital converters, and analog front-end design
Preferred Skills and Experience
- GCC/Eclipse based toolchains
- DSP algorithm implementations on deeply embedded platforms
- Schematic entry and PCB Layout using Altium Designer
- ECAD/MCAD co-design using Solidworks
- ARM Cortex M 32-bit microcontrollers
- Matlab, Labview, C, C++, and C#; design of DC-DC converters, AC motor drives, and control algorithms
- Sensors such as MEMs accelerometers, piezoelectric sensing, MEMs microphones, etc.
- Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required
Work Location and Travel
Your working location will be fully on-site located in State College, PA. This role requires periodic travel to remote locations.
Minimum Education and Experience
If filled as R&D Engineer - Electronics (ARL) - Senior Professional: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science with 14+ years of relevant experience.
If filled as R&D Engineer - Electronics (ARL) - Advanced Professional: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science with 5+ years of relevant experience.
If filled as R&D Engineer - Electronics (ARL) - Intermediate Professional: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science with 2+ years of relevant experience.

Pay
The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $105,900.00 - $231,000.00.
