Electronic Electrician
Examination date: week of September 14, 2026. Certified candidates will receive exam details via email at a later date.
Responsibilities
This is highly skilled electronics and electrician work in wiring, testing, installation, calibration, and repair of:
- Electrical equipment and instruments
- Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
- Data transmission and acquisition systems
- Computers and telemetry systems
- Electrical co-generation equipment
- Audio/video equipment
Qualifications
Education
Must meet one of the following:
- High school diploma (or G.E.D.) and journeyman electrician certification with a certificate in electronics or a related field; or
- High school diploma (or G.E.D.) and completion of a four-year certificate program in electronics or a related field; or
- Associate degree in Electronics.
Degree must be from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
Experience
- Five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, obtained within the past 10 years.
- Thorough training and competence in the use of personal computers and Windows operating systems.
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of computer-hosted data acquisition systems, including PLC and/or RTU functions.
License & Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of continued employment.
- Must not be colorblind.
Promotional Qualifications
Must be a full-time or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 125 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection.
Additional Requirements
- Final appointment is contingent upon passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of employment authorization and identity.
- Background investigation required prior to employment, including for current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion.
- Final appointment is contingent upon passing a drug screen and nicotine screening (new hires must remain tobacco and nicotine-free as a condition of employment; policy does not apply to current employees).
