Responsibilities

Under supervision and in accordance with standardized procedures, the Electrocardiograph Technician operates electrocardiograph equipment to record electrical wave tracings of heart activity for diagnostic purposes. Key duties include:

  • Preparing and positioning patients for electrocardiograph tests under medical authority.
  • Attaching electrodes to specific areas of the patient’s body as required.
  • Operating the machine and adjusting switches to obtain tracings of impulses from various parts of the heart.
  • Identifying sections of tracings by pressing a marker button to signify electrode positions.
  • Noting irregularities in the recording process and reporting equipment malfunctions to prevent damage.
  • Maintaining records and files of tracings.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a senior high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma.
  • One year of experience as an Electrocardiograph Technician in an approved hospital or in the office of a recognized Cardiologist; or a satisfactory equivalent.
