About the role

Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway, where joining our Mechanical Department means contributing to the backbone of our nation's rail infrastructure. The Electrician Diesel Engine position is critical for ensuring the reliable operation and safety of locomotive electrical systems and shop machinery. This is a full-time position (40 hrs/wk) and is subject to seniority and governed by union agreement. Assigned shift may be one of three 8-hour shifts. Mechanical shops operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Travel is minimal. Training is company paid on-the-job paid training.

Relocation assistance is not available and there is a 60-day probationary period for Journeymen and 120-day probationary period for Apprentices.

Responsibilities

• Testing, inspecting, and repairing electrical components of locomotive systems and shop machinery.
• Maintaining and repairing locomotive alternators, generators, motors, AC/DC power control systems, electrical cabinets, lighting, batteries, and wiring.
• Inspecting, adjusting, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical components of shop equipment (drop tables, welding, mechanical and electromagnetic equipment) and performing preventative maintenance to ensure proper function.

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working on or around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Requirements

• Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
• At least 18 years of age or will be by the anticipated start date listed above.
• Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
• Able to work safely in the above working conditions.
• Able to work the above shift/hours.
• Ability to read, write and communicate (speak, hear, and understand) in English.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs without assistance.
• Ability to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow, and lunar (clear light).
• Ability to discriminate and differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) in the work environment.
• Ability to use hands and use hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
• Ability to climb ladders; get on/off equipment.
• Ability to bend, walk, stand, and sit occasionally with breaks.
• Ability to occasionally work at various heights above the ground, including working on top of a locomotive.

Qualifications

• 4 years of practical experience in electrical work.
• Union membership is with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and union dues are required per union agreement.

Pay

Entry rate is approximately $37.18-44.26/hr with annual pay of $77,331 to $92,060 with 3-5 years seniority.
