Electrical Trades III - Greeley

About the role

The Region 4 Traffic Unit, located in Greeley, operates and maintains regional traffic signals, traffic control devices, and highway lighting systems. The unit also manages the computer hardware and software for these traffic systems, and it upgrades and installs electrical circuits in all CDOT properties in accordance with the National Electrical Code.

Responsibilities

• Plans, assigns and reviews the work of assigned personnel;
• Covers coordination with other CDOT work units and external customers;
• Ensures that activities are performed in accordance with appropriate plans, specifications and agency standards;
• Schedules staff, equipment and products with allotted region dollars to meet levels of service;
• Installs, inspects, maintains and repairs traffic control devices and systems, including traffic signals, highway lighting, warning beacons, roadway lighting, interconnect communications, variable message signs, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices;
• Installs, maintains, and inspects equipment, including Intelligent Transportation Systems, video monitoring, fiber optics, hardwire, and radio systems;
• Installs, maintains, and inspects temporary traffic control devices in work areas according to current policies and standards;
• Develops performance plans; conducts performance reviews; develops performance objectives;
• Adheres to and ensures compliance with CDOT rules;
• Supervises and/or performs the installation, maintenance, and inspection of electrical equipment in CDOT buildings and facilities, including inspection of electrical services for light, heat, and power;
• Maintains CDOT's assets, including but not limited to equipment, tools, materials, and facilities per manufacturer's recommendation and CDOT standards;
• Implements signal timing and program changes to traffic signals as traffic conditions warrant; prioritizes signal improvement needs; troubleshoots complex malfunctions;
• Works with consultants, CDOT personnel, and private developers on design plans for traffic signal and highway lighting installations to ensure they meet specifications;
• Ensures compliance with the National Electric Code for CDOT building and traffic control devices;
• Supports and coordinates operations and initiates changes particularly in emergency conditions and unique situations;
• Manages emergency response incidents, including road closures, accidents, hazardous materials spills, avalanches and road failures;
• Coordinates with State Patrol and the Sheriff's Office;
• Represents CDOT with cities, counties, other groups and officials, and the public;
• Addresses, prioritizes, and follows up on complaints and repair requests from customers;
• Available 24 hours a day for emergency service calls and rotating scheduled on-call;
• Must report in a timely manner to observe, troubleshoot, assess the reported problem, and complete repairs;
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Two years of skilled journey level electrical experience related to traffic operations;
• Possession of a current, valid Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician License.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated success performing the duties as listed in the description of the job section;
• Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
• At least four years of traffic signal experience and/or experience in electronic programming and maintenance or electrical control circuit maintenance;
• Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of the National Electrical code;
• Comprehensive knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment;
• Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic (wireless and hardwire), cabling handling, termination and splicing;
• Knowledge and understanding of ITS devices (e.g. variable message signs, close circuit TV, radar and/or weather stations);
• Strong leadership, training, and supervisory skills;
• Knowledge and experience effectively dealing with human resources and personnel issues/complaints;
• Strong planning, time, and project management skills;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills;
• Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
• Strong commitment to safety;
• Excellent reasoning, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving ability;
• Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy;
• Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.

Skills

Pay

Biweekly pay schedule with 26 pay periods in a year.

Schedule

Primarily 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM work hours, Monday - Friday. Approximately 30% spent in the office, 70% spent in the field with travel and physical work. Travel required during work hours throughout the Region. Occasional overnight travel 10-20 times a year throughout Colorado.

Conditions of Employment

• Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado;
• Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks;
• May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
