Electrical Trades II (Traffic) - Colorado Springs

About the role

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a vacancy for an Electrical Trades II position, located in CDOT's Traffic Section in the Pueblo office. In this position, you will install and repair roadway lighting, building wiring, and traffic control devices.

Responsibilities

• Perform journeyman level electrical work;
• Install, repair, maintain and inspect traffic control devices and systems within Region 2 including, but not limited to: traffic signals, flashing beacons, lighting, and variable message signs;
• determine emergency troubleshooting and repair of traffic signals and traffic control devices;
• Install, repair, maintain and inspect communication systems, including but not limited to: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, video monitoring and detections, fiber optics, hardwire and radio systems;
• Install, repair, maintain and inspect electrical infrastructure, including but not limited to: electrical distribution services, lighting, heating equipment, and power distribution;
• inspect and repair electrical equipment in Region 2’s buildings and facilities;
• troubleshoot complex electrical problems such as voltage drop, conduit fill, motor calculations, conductor sizing and deration and determine proper electrical installations;
• locate and repair underground shorts and faults caused by deterioration, construction, maintenance, accidents and forces of nature;
• determine cost efficient and effective use of time, materials, services and equipment;
• ensure that all work is compliant with all applicable standards and regulations;
• develop and implement plans and procedures for installations;
• read and interpret plans; update all plan sets and drawings with recent changes to assure accurate as-built designs;
• operate equipment such as aerial device, backhoe, loader, trencher, concrete saw, and other specialized equipment;
• use hand and power tools;
• locate underground cables and utilities for contractors and maintenance;
• plan, layout, organize, coordinate and delegate direction and instruction on electrical maintenance, installations and control measures to less experienced electricians;
• respond to customer complaints and reports of traffic control equipment failures and malfunctions.

Requirements

Required to be on-call on a rotating basis. The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather.

Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet.

Frequent travel during work day for training, meetings, and assigned work orders.

Required to drive CDOT vehicles.

Work around live electric, gas, water and other utility lines.

Exposure to loud noises.

Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin.

Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock.

Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold.

Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties.

Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.

Must be able to work at 11,000 feet altitude.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.

A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

On-call Shift work Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare. (maintenance subarea only)

Qualifications

Current, valid licensure as a journeyman electrician from the Colorado Electrical Board.

Skills

Experienced Electrician;

Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;

Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of the National Electrical Code;

Comprehensive knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment;

Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic (wireless and hardwire), cable handling, termination and splicing;

Utilizing the National Electric Code, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) , construction standards, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and CDOT's Standards and Specifications book;

Knowledge and understanding of ITS devices (e.g. Variable Message Signs, Close Circuit TV, radar and/or weather stations);

Proven leadership and/or mentoring skills;

Excellent project management, work scheduling, and organizational skills;

Strong oral and written communication skills;

Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;

Traffic control coursework is a plus;
