About the role

The New York Power Authority’s Operations Manager is accountable for the daily management and coordination of NYPA’s overall operations, including overseeing, monitoring, and evaluating operational performance; directing the preparation of operating budgets and proposals for capital expenditure and investments in infrastructure, technology, equipment, systems, or other assets and resources; and analyzing and approving operational investments that best meet the organization’s business needs. The role ensures the day-to-day reliability and performance of equipment associated with plant and facility operations, including repairs, adjustments, and maintenance of production equipment, machinery, or instruments to ensure reliable function and compliance with process specifications.

The temporary reporting location is the Byron Switchyard at 6959 Batavia–Byron Rd, Byron, NY 14422. The permanent reporting location will transition to 856 Route 441, Macedon, NY 14502 in early 2027.

Responsibilities

• Supervise maintenance department(s); prepare and monitor day-to-day work activities of crafts; collaborate with planners on scheduling; oversee employee safety and labor relations.
• Implement Maintenance and Reliability Management (MRM) and Asset Management policies and procedures by ensuring maintenance is performed as planned and scheduled.
• Review job packages for completeness and currency prior to work performance; verify completed work, job packages, and maintenance work orders to confirm all steps are complete and data is recorded.
• Provide input to planning, scheduling, and evaluation of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance within the discipline.
• Ensure maintenance is performed according to established Priority Levels; support development and use of Work Plans, Job Plans, and Job Packages.
• Review and co-approve technical maintenance procedures within the discipline; monitor, review, and evaluate methods, procedures, and practices associated with the MRM Program.
• Interface with other disciplines to evaluate and adjust the effectiveness of maintenance programs; provide input and justification for the annual departmental budget for maintenance requirements.
• Identify and develop future skill requirements through training and job enrichment to maintain acceptable technical and crafts expertise.
• Analyze and recommend solutions for maintenance and construction problems to engineering staff for implementation.
• Ensure work crews perform quality work safely and efficiently in accordance with approved job plans, procedures, and practices; develop subordinates to provide a capable and reliable workforce.
• When necessary, enforce the Bargaining Unit Agreement, company policies, administer discipline, and handle grievance meetings.
• Manage employees including performance management, salary administration, succession planning, workload balancing, and staffing modifications to meet NYPA needs.
• Supervise union employees on a daily basis, including labor relations, time management, and monitoring direct activity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• A working understanding of present and future operating systems across the Region’s area of maintenance control.
• Understanding of laws and regulations affecting NYPA and their application.
• Familiarity with systems used to schedule maintenance activities and monitor budgets and regulatory compliance.
• Ability to solve problems as they arise.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to facilitate and address group meetings.
• Working knowledge of contract and corporate policies to guide the department.
• Ability to mentor, coach, and administer discipline to craft personnel as required.
• Understanding of related disciplines, divisions, and departments and their interaction with assigned work.
• Working understanding of present and future technologies to support routine maintenance activities.
• Excellent supervisory and organizational skills; ability to acknowledge and address performance issues.
• Ability to coordinate activities with other departments and interconnects to optimize manpower and reduce scheduled outages.
• Familiarity with Arc Flash and related electrical safety standards.
• Good understanding of Clearance Protection Procedures; ability to obtain CPP-1 Clearance holder.

Education, Experience and Certifications

• High school diploma or Associate’s degree in a related industry.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Completed a recognized apprenticeship training program or equivalent experience.
• 10 years of experience in an applicable field.
• Experience supervising craft personnel preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate motor vehicles in locations consistent with job duties.

Physical Requirements

• 24-hour, 7-days-per-week availability required.
• Must be physically capable of performing duties at each level of the craft classifications.

Pay

The estimated salary range for this position is $112,000 – $154,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
