ELECTRICAL PUMP MECHANIC (HONOLULU ZOO)

Full-time

Under the general supervision of the Park Grounds Maintenance Superintendent, this position installs, repairs, overhauls and maintains a variety of electrically-driven pumps, electric motors, valves and appurtenant equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, service, install and repair pumps, switches, valves, gaskets, fittings, bearings, filters, motors, chlorinators for operations of complex filtration and circulation systems.
  • Monitor and address pump filtration and circulation gauges and pressure readings.
  • Check and adjust water levels.
  • Perform water quality tests.
  • Practice ozone safety and operations.
  • Work closely with head of maintenance and staff to troubleshoot and resolve problems with complex filtration and circulation systems.
  • Communicate effectively, coordinate activities, work harmoniously with others, follow and understand policies and procedures, write reports and instructions and follow safety regulations and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Special Work Requirements

  • 7-day-a-week operation, hours may vary, and must be able to work evening, holidays and weekends.
  • Exposure to acids, chlorine, and sewage gases.
  • Heavy lifting and carrying.

Requirements

  • At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position, involving the repair and overhaul of electrically-driven pumps and related equipment.
  • Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment.

Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Tools, materials and practices used in the maintenance and repair of electrically operated pumps and other equipment such as chlorinators, filters, manual and hydraulic valves, electric motors, shaft seals, etc.
  • Hazards and safety practices involved in working around electricity and moving machinery.

Ability to:

  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical defects in the operation of electrically-driven pumps and make repairs independently.
  • Work harmoniously with others.
