About the role

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The selected candidate will be an AIS employee working under day‑to‑day direction from Y‑12 staff to advance the site’s mission of ensuring a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and able to meet pre‑employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high‑quality detailed design packages and provide engineering procurement and field technical support.
  • Prepare conceptual engineering deliverables: cost‑estimating bills of material and labor‑hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and Title II design deliverables (calculations, analyses, construction specifications & drawings, equipment specifications).
  • Work as a team member of an integrated project team and routinely perform walkdowns in existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
  • Apply technical expertise in electrical engineering with a primary instrumentation/controls focus for equipment process control and monitoring.
  • Provide self‑performed technical solutions to difficult problems using established engineering practices, codes, and standards.
  • Perform field troubleshooting of existing systems to inform design for corrective actions.
  • Prepare conduit/cable schedules, conduit/equipment plans, one‑line diagrams, wiring/connection/schematic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, sections/elevations/details, calculations, datasheets, and construction specifications.
  • Develop control cabinet assembly drawings, system diagrams, and control logic for batch and continuous processes using conventional analog instrumentation, distributed digital control systems, and PLC/HMI systems.
  • Develop process control system narratives, aid in software requirements development, and provide input to P&IDs.

Qualifications

  • ABET‑accredited bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with 20+ years of experience, or a master’s degree with 19+ years of experience and more than 5 years of instrumentation and controls design experience.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance; highly desired but not required to start.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing the National Electrical Code, UL508A, and relevant ISA standards to design instrumentation and controls systems.
  • Experience utilizing Rockwell Automation industrial automation software (RSLogix, FactoryTalk View, etc.) is preferred but not required.
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) is preferred but not required.

Special Requirements

  • Post‑offer, pre‑employment drug test.
  • Job‑related pre‑placement medical examinations may be required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance; if designated, participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre‑employment screen.
  • Position contingent upon contract award and funding; selected applicants may be offered but cannot begin work until funding is confirmed.
