Electrical Engineer II

This role reports to the Chief Department Engineer and Project Department Engineer, and may supervise Engineer I, Designers, and Draftspersons.

Responsibilities

• Perform moderately complex design calculations and drawing development for the construction, maintenance, and repair of maritime vessels and shipboard systems, including structural, propulsion, electrical, and hydraulic mechanics.
• Comply with Austal’s employee handbook, company procedures, and policies.
• Interact with Production, multiple design teams, customer representatives, and equipment manufacturers.
• Lead and direct the work of Engineers I, Designers, and Draftspersons, including determining the technical adequacy of drawings and calculations.
• Provide input to evaluations of Engineers I, Designers, and Draftspersons.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
• 2 to 6 years of relevant engineering experience in manufacturing, construction, or a similar industry; shipbuilding experience preferred.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Leadership skills with the ability to help grow company culture and train/develop level 1 engineers.
• Understanding of scheduling and ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office products.
• Working knowledge of power distribution, motor controllers, variable frequency drives, lighting systems, and communication systems.
• Familiarity with IEEE standards, ABS rules, IEC standards, SOLAS, Military Specifications, and/or NEC.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in steel and aluminum ship construction.
• Working knowledge of ship and propulsion systems.
• Familiarity with Maritime Regulatory Authorities (e.g., ABS, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO).
• Working knowledge of modular construction methods.
• Experience in design and construction of US Navy vessels.
• Working knowledge of shock design.
• Experience or knowledge of FEA methods, FEMAP/NASTRAN, or composite shafting.

Employment Guidelines

• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance if required by the position.
• 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
• Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
• No felony convictions for theft/deception or violent crimes within the last seven years.
• No felony convictions for drug crimes within the last three years.
• Willing to submit to a drug screen and background check.

• Computer with MS Office and AutoCAD.

Work Environment

The role involves exposure to various environmental conditions, including:

• Humid conditions, bright flashing lights, and moving mechanical parts.
• High precarious places and outside weather conditions.
• Extreme heat, fumes, or airborne particles at or below the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL).
• Toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat or cold.
• Very loud noise levels, typically exceeding 90 dB.
