Electrical Engineer - Buildings

About the Role

Our Buildings team is seeking a talented Electrical Engineer / Project Designer to join our multidisciplinary team and deliver impactful design solutions for clients across a variety of market sectors. You will work as part of a team on larger projects and lead smaller projects under the guidance of a lead Senior Engineer/Designer. You will evaluate, select, specify, and engineer electrical power, lighting, fire alarm, and other low-voltage systems while verifying compliance with applicable codes and internal engineering standards. This position is based in our Philadelphia, PA office.

Responsibilities

• Create electrical design documentation using Revit, AutoCAD, and other relevant software, providing direction to junior staff to convey design intent.
• Supervise and mentor assigned staff to develop their technical abilities and career goals.
• Lead the development of designs through sketches, engineering calculations, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
• Prepare and review documentation in various project phases, including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details.
• Coordinate with other building disciplines (architectural, structural, mechanical, civil) to ensure compatibility with design intent.
• Perform or review advanced calculations of building elements and electrical systems using company-standard and proprietary software.
• Conduct or review field work to assess existing facility conditions and monitor contractor work.
• Lead construction administration duties, including shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, client/contractor interfacing, and site observation reports.
• Evaluate and select building electrical systems/materials and develop discipline-specific specifications.
• Attend project coordination meetings with internal and external teams.
• Participate in value engineering and basic cost-estimating exercises.
• Apply technical expertise to meet project requirements within established timeframes and budgets.
• Provide client consultation and nurture existing client relationships while pursuing new business opportunities.
• Act as a technical resource for staff at all levels, training them on software, codes, field work, and design processes.
• Maintain current knowledge of technologies, trends, and sustainable design principles applicable to projects.

Requirements

• Thorough understanding of electrical engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas effectively.
• Solid knowledge of power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems for the built environment.
• Experience in the construction industry and/or knowledge of construction processes, including construction administration.
• Strong understanding of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
• Ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects.
• Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA, International Building Codes, Energy Codes).
• Strong client communication, interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate in team settings.
• Ability to manage multiple overlapping projects while maintaining execution and schedule.
• Ability to recognize technical problems and initiate corrective actions.
• Proficiency in checking others' work for accuracy and completeness.
• Ability to mentor junior staff and provide constructive feedback.
• Ability to develop sketches, drawings, and building programs for junior staff.
• Ability to perform and interpret project-specific calculations (e.g., load, short circuit, lighting).
• Ability to produce and interpret technical reports and studies.
• Ability to develop project-specific technical specifications from master specifications.

Skills

• Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD for drafting/design.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with AGI 32, SKM, and Newforma is advantageous.
• Working knowledge of low-voltage systems (e.g., telecommunications, security, fire alarm) is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (lighting/electrical emphasis).
• Minimum 7 years of experience in the construction industry preferred.
• Professional Engineering license is not required but encouraged for future pursuit.
• LEED Green Associate or LEED AP certification is not required but encouraged for future pursuit.

Pay

Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD, and various CA, NJ, VA areas: $100,000.00 - $145,000.00 annually.

Schedule

Full-time, regular employee status. Primary location: Philadelphia, PA (other locations: Butler, PA). No travel required.
