Electrical Commissioning Technician - Medium Voltage Systems

Responsibilities

  • Perform commissioning of medium-voltage switchgear, substations, and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Support commissioning of utility interconnections and service entrance systems.
  • Commission transformers, protective relays, and grounding systems in accordance with project requirements.
  • Oversee commissioning of medium-voltage distribution systems feeding UPS, PDUs, and critical loads.
  • Develop, review, and execute commissioning plans, procedures, scripts, and test protocols.
  • Cookordinate commissioning activities with owners, engineers, contractors, utilities, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Validate system readiness through inspections, functional testing, and integrated systems testing.
  • Identify deficiencies, track issues, and verify corrective actions through to closeout.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable codes and standards (NFPA, NEC, IEEE, NETA, OSHA), and client commissioning requirements.
  • Provide on-site technical leadership and mentorship to commissioning staff and field teams.
  • Support system start-up, energization, and turnover activities while maintaining strict adherence to safety controls.
  • Maintain detailed commissioning documentation, reports, and final turnover records.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of medium-voltage electrical systems, including switchgear, substations, and power distribution.
  • Familiarity with electrical testing standards and practices (NETA, IEEE, NFPA, NEC).
  • Proven ability to develop and execute commissioning plans and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of system integration, functional testing, and startup processes.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills within energized or pre-energized environments.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills with multidisciplinary project teams and stakeholders.
  • Able to lead and mentor field personnel in a fast-paced construction or commissioning environment.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent documentation and reporting capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred.
  • NETA certification preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
