About the role

This position involves performing technical work, supervising and participating in the construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of the power and lighting distribution system. It also includes responding to customer complaints related to power quality.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency calls; investigates problems, restores power, and minimizes service interruption;
  • Responds to customer requests concerning electrical supply;
  • Troubleshoots essential systems to maximize efficiency and performance;
  • Prepares paperwork and related reports;
  • Connects, disconnects, installs, repairs and replaces electric services and other electrical facilities energized at primary and secondary voltages;
  • Installs, repairs, operates, maintains, and replaces electric distribution system facilities;
  • Assists electric line crews as needed;
  • Provides direction and supervision to subordinates;
  • Ensures productivity, adherence to policies, effective performance evaluations, and individual skill development;
  • PRACTICES AND ENFORCES SAFETY RULES AND ENSURES PROPER USE OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education or equivalent.
  • Experienced in performing electric line construction and maintenance on electrical facilities energized at primary and secondary voltages.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid North Carolina commercial class “A” driver's license within 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of electric line construction, operation and maintenance practices, and the installation, operation and maintenance of electric facilities.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, practices, methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in electric line construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of hand tools, test equipment, and small power tools.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with the work.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Rocky Mount electric distribution system.

  • Skill in operating various types of motorized equipment used in the construction, operation and maintenance of the electric distribution system.
  • Skill in climbing utility poles in a proficient manner.
  • Skill in the supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.

  • Skill in setting priorities for competing projects.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Supervisory Controls

The Electric Distribution Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Complexity

The work consists of related technical and supervisory duties. The need to work in the vicinity of other utilities and in heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position.

Scope and Effect

The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in installation and maintenance of street and area lighting and other electrical facilities energized at secondary voltages. Success in this position results in the provision of electric utilities for system customers.

Personal Contacts

The work is performed outdoors, in all types of weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, and dirt. The work requires the use of protective devices such as, safety glasses, FR clothes, Rubber Sleeves and Rubber Gloves.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel. Full time jobs are provided.
