Duties

  • Operate, maintain, and repair all assigned electrical generating equipment, including exciters, alternators, DC generators, control circuits, voltage controls, battery backup systems, switchgear, and transformers.
  • Ensure the care, inspection, certification, and replacement of all safety equipment.
  • Perform simple repairs to the high-voltage distribution system, such as cutouts, fuses, lightning arrestors, and opening/closing circuit switches.
  • Advise and implement the power plant maintenance program, interpreting work instructions from the Utilities Supervisor.
  • Perform leadership duties by demonstrating proper operating methods and explaining unusual steps and processes.
  • Act as a working leader for a group of journeyman Electric Power Controllers and High Voltage Electricians, including supervising crews and responding to emergencies.
  • Operate power generation and distribution systems supporting industrial and residential operations on the Naval base, including remote starting of diesel-powered generators and monitoring commercial power conversion to auxiliary systems.
  • Monitor voltage and amperage, making precise adjustments to ensure adequate power for load demands.
  • Read and analyze interrelated meter indications to detect abnormal conditions (e.g., circuit overloads, improper line voltages, equipment temperature) and determine causes, making necessary corrections by adjusting controls.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position. Emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies in the following job elements:

  • Ability to perform the work of an Electric Power Controller Leader without more than normal supervision, including:
    • Leading a group of journeyman Electric Power Controllers and High Voltage Electricians, explaining processes, and supervising crews during emergencies.
    • Possessing journey-level knowledge and skill in controlling the generation or distribution of electric power in power plants, distribution centers, and substations.
    • Operating power generation and distribution systems for industrial and residential operations, including remote monitoring and switching between commercial and auxiliary power.
    • Monitoring voltage and amperage and making precise adjustments to meet load demands.
    • Analyzing meter indications to detect and correct abnormal conditions such as circuit overloads or improper voltages.

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer experience through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, or social organizations).

Additional Information

  • This position is being recruited for the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) and may later be realigned under the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC).
  • Entitled to a Remote Allowance of $10 per day.
  • Travel by military or commercial aircraft, boats, or ships may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
