About the role

The role overview is responsible for performing diversified work, such as constructing, installing, and maintaining underground and overhead electric distribution systems at all voltages.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems and secondary services, including climbing utility poles to install and/or repair transformers, meters, switching systems, and streetlights.
  • Operates all departmental equipment utilized in the installation and maintenance of the electrical system, such as bucket truck, digger derrick, pole truck, and other large trucks.
  • Attends in-house electric education and training seminars.
  • Cut brush and trims trees to maintain the existing right-of-way.
  • Assists in maintaining departmental vehicles and equipment.
  • Keeps records of work performed and prepares reports as required.
  • Stocks work truck with supplies.
  • Responds appropriately to customer inquiries, complaints, and requests for information.
  • Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or Possess GED, plus at least two years of experience as a groundman or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of: construction practices, tools, and materials used in the electrical field and techniques and safety practices involved in installation and maintenance of electric distribution systems; electric, hydraulic, and mechanical fundamentals; electronics; and mathematical applications.
  • Skills/Ability to: read maps, interpret map logic, and understand electric diagrams; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; work under prolonged periods of stress due to the hazards of electricity; identify and choose among several alternative solutions for situations that change occasionally; climb poles to make necessary repairs; interpret and apply established rules, regulations, and requirements; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; be constantly aware of safety hazards; apply safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; and maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and good driving record.
  • Safety/Physical Requirements: Tasks require individual to be consistently alert to, and aware of safety hazards; apply safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; the ability to work under prolonged periods of stress due to the hazards of electricity; climb poles to make necessary repairs; bending, stooping, lifting or carrying a force equal to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Appropriate valid Texas Class C driver's license. Texas Class A or B CDL preferred.
