About the Role

The EHS Specialist will lead and oversee the Health and Safety program, direct and oversee programs that support Hexion’s goal of a compliant and incident-free workplace, and provide in-field support, leadership, coaching, and technical expertise to site and local leadership teams. The Health and Safety Specialist will support execution of Hexion’s strategic and tactical plan for all Health and Safety matters and will be based in the Morganton, North Carolina facility.

The successful candidate understands the regulatory and tactical overlap of the Health, Safety and Process Safety regulations, and is capable in implementing policies and practices to maintain compliance. This position fosters a culture of engagement, empowerment, and compliance through direction and oversight of programs that support Hexion’s primary goal of a compliant and incident-free workplace. The EHS Specialist plans and directs activities for alignment with the corporation’s EHS goals and initiatives for the site. The position provides in-the-field support to leadership, coaching, and technical expertise to the site and local leadership teams to meet these goals. Responsibilities

  • Assess facility operations for regulatory applicability and local regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal safety, health, and environmental regulations.
  • Actively lead and support Health and Safety programs (e.g., workplace safety and contractor administration) with operations and plant leadership-level associates at the site.
  • Identify potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate risks associated with chemical processes.
  • Manage the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals working with environmental COE.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify areas for improvement and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of employee safety programs.
  • Participate on EHS project teams.
  • Provide and monitor safety training programs to instruct employees in site EHS policies and procedures/initiatives.
  • Respond to emergency situations and coordinate evacuation efforts if necessary.
  • Maintain records of safety-related incidents and submit necessary reports to regulatory bodies.
  • Focus on promoting and supporting an EHS culture from within by driving the implementation of core EHS programs, policies, and initiatives.
  • Lead Incident Investigation and drive corrective action through cause mapping and 5-why analysis.
  • Be the primary resource in managing/conducting sampling, audits, and permitting requirements for the site.
  • Assist in contractor safety training and walking jobs around maintenance and contractor activities.
  • Be an active, engaged part of the site safety team by interacting with associates remotely and in the field.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as an EHS professional in a manufacturing/industrial environment (chemical industry a plus).
  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline is preferred but not required. Industrial Chemical Industry experience is preferred, and a combination of formal Health and Safety training will be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be self-directed at times.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to lead and influence project teams.
  • Passion for recognizing and leading positive change.
  • Aptitude to lead and make challenging decisions in any situation.

Travel Requirements

10% domestic travel.
