EHS Manager Job

Primary location: Macon, Georgia. Full-time role with less than 10% travel. Non-compete agreement not required.

About the Role

This leadership position reports to the Plant Manager and is responsible for the environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) processes of the plant. You’ll develop and implement strategies to help manufacturing, maintenance, distribution, and support staff achieve EH&S performance objectives while aligning with the plant’s vision, mission, and values.

Pay

Estimated base salary range: $120,000 to $145,000 per year. Individual pay is based on location, skills, expertise, experience, and other relevant factors.

Responsibilities

Safety and Environmental

• Lead the plant in achieving a sustainable safety culture through effective implementation of safety processes and initiatives, focusing on risk and incident reduction, compliance, case management, and safety system effectiveness (e.g., risk assessment, coaching, incident investigation, line audit, and training).
• Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, and state regulations, as well as Armstrong’s environmental, safety, and health policies and standard operating procedures.
• Provide functional knowledge of key OSHA regulations and industry standards (e.g., recordkeeping, confined space, energy isolation, machine safeguarding, powered industrial trucks, electrical safety, hazardous communications, and industrial hygiene monitoring).
• Provide functional knowledge of key EPA and state environmental regulations and industry standards (e.g., air, waste, wastewater, stormwater).
• Work with business unit, plant floor, and leadership teams to identify and implement safety and health improvement opportunities based on employee feedback, observations, best practices, and data trends.
• Develop and maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines.
• Ensure adequate recordkeeping and report filing for compliance.
• Interface with regulatory agencies, committee members, and staff to formulate corrective actions.
• Monitor current information on regulations and requirements related to hazardous materials and agents.
• Investigate and evaluate new equipment to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place.
• Support Armstrong sustainability initiatives.

Leadership

• Execute the plant’s strategic and operating plans to ensure environmental and safety compliance while improving overall operating results.
• Interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
• Provide urgent response to operational issues 24/7, including environmental upset conditions and case management of safety incidents.
• Develop and manage budgets for safety and environmental activities (e.g., safety supplies, safety recognition, consulting and testing, waste removal, and sewer fees).
• Interface with Corporate EHS to execute Armstrong initiatives and actively participate in the AWI EHS Network.
• Direct the activities of the Safety Leadership Team and plant environmental and safety committees.
• Serve as an active member of the Plant Leadership team, partnering with other managers to discuss and resolve non-routine issues and challenges.
• Maintain and update EHS Glass Wall as the reporting, tracking, and management tool.
• Work closely with a third-party administrator (TPA) to manage workers’ compensation cases.
• Participate in lean and GEMBA activities to drive operator engagement and involvement.
• Participate in AWI Corporate audits and process improvement events as required.

Requirements

• BS degree or equivalent work experience in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of applied EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience managing workers’ compensation and case management.
• Experience with environmental permitting (particularly air permitting), recordkeeping, and reporting.
• Experience creating, administering, and implementing safety programs (including SOPs, JSAs, and ergonomics).
• Experience with Behavior-Based Safety principles.
• Experience in safety training development and implementation.
• Demonstrated project management skills for moderately complex projects.
• Ability to work with data sets from multiple sources (e.g., Data Historian, Infinity, Microsoft Access, SAP) to identify opportunities and assess situations.
• Highly effective communication and data organization skills.
• Incident investigation expertise, including Root Cause Analysis and/or Five Why Analysis.
• Project management and team facilitation skills.
• Proven training and development experience.
• Intermediate-level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification.
• General Industrial Hygiene knowledge, with sampling experience preferred.
• Experience leading safety culture improvement.
• Case management experience with workers’ compensation programs.
• Familiarity with Six Sigma, Lean, and/or other process improvement methods.
