About the role

The Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading the Environmental, Health & Safety strategy, programs, and policies across North America sites. This role has a strong emphasis on environmental compliance, environmental stewardship, and sustainability, while also ensuring robust occupational health and safety programs across manufacturing, office, and distribution operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of the North America EHS strategy, with a strong focus on environmental compliance, environmental risk management, and sustainability performance.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain environmental policies, standards, procedures, and management systems across all manufacturing, office, and distribution facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, provincial, and local environmental regulations and requirements.
  • Oversee environmental permitting and compliance obligations for all North America sites.
  • Direct environmental audits, compliance assessments, and risk reviews to identify gaps, drive corrective actions, and prevent regulatory non-compliance.
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert on environmental regulations and provide interpretation, guidance, and practical implementation support to site and business leaders.
  • Lead environmental incident response, investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action processes.
  • Partner with operations, facilities, engineering, and site leadership to evaluate environmental risks associated with process changes, capital projects, expansions, and new product or facility initiatives.
  • Drive standardization and continuous improvement of environmental programs related to waste management, recycling, pollution prevention, resource conservation, and environmental reporting.
  • Oversee environmental data collection, validation, and reporting, including emissions, waste, water, energy, and other sustainability metrics required for internal and external reporting.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for environmental regulatory agencies, inspections, audits, notices, and compliance matters.
  • Provide strategic leadership for occupational health and safety programs to build and sustain a culture committed to safe work practices, incident prevention, employee wellbeing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Establish and maintain EHS standards, policies, and procedures across all sites to reduce workplace risk and support consistent execution.
  • Monitor and report EHS performance metrics, including both leading and lagging indicators, and prepare regular updates for senior leadership.
  • Lead significant incident investigation processes, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions are effectively implemented and broadly shared as appropriate.
  • Oversee contractor, consultant, and third-party compliance with company EHS expectations, standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Develop and support EHS training programs to strengthen site capability, regulatory awareness, and leadership accountability.
  • Champion sustainability initiatives across North America, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, emissions reduction, environmental stewardship, and climate-related action planning.
  • Support development and execution of environmental sustainability goals aligned with business priorities and corporate objectives.
  • Drive the use of KPIs and management operating systems to measure EHS effectiveness, compliance status, and continuous improvement progress.
  • Support and strengthen EHS management systems, governance processes, and audit readiness across the region.
  • Collaborate with Dover Corporate EHS and internal stakeholders to align regional programs with corporate standards, reporting expectations, and strategic initiatives.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the EHS team by providing direction, training, technical guidance, and professional development support.
  • Build strong partnerships with operations, legal, HR, quality, engineering, supply chain, and business leadership to integrate EHS requirements into day-to-day decision-making.
  • Develop strategic plans in collaboration with business and functional leaders to ensure EHS priorities support both compliance and operational goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or related field required.
  • 15+ years of progressive EHS experience, with significant emphasis on environmental compliance and environmental program leadership in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Multi-site North America EHS leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, compliance systems, and environmental risk management in a multi-site industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health and safety requirements and the ability to balance environmental, safety, operational, and business priorities.
  • Experience leading ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 – compliant EHS Management Systems is preferred.
  • Proven ability to build practical, scalable EHS programs that improve compliance, reduce risk, and support operational performance.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root cause analysis capability.
  • Ability to influence leaders and drive accountability across multiple sites and functions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with regulators, site teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • A proactive, hands-on leadership style with strong execution discipline.
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to make informed decisions in complex or ambiguous situations.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, team development, and building a culture of environmental responsibility and safety excellence.
  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental regulatory compliance, permitting, inspections, audits, and remediation of compliance gaps.
  • Experience leading programs involving hazardous waste, air, water, chemical management, spill prevention, and environmental reporting.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable OSHA and environmental regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with sustainability, resource efficiency, and environmental performance improvement initiatives preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CHMM, CSP, CIH, or relevant environmental credentials are a plus.
  • Strong data analysis, reporting, and project management skills.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
