About the role

The Educator Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) PRN position at Houston Methodist is responsible for developing and implementing CPE curriculum, facilitating courses, and ensuring content meets accreditation standards set by ACPE. This role also involves providing clinical supervision to CPE students as they offer spiritual care to patients, families, and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Fosters a supportive and positive environment for Houston Methodist CPE students, collaborating and communicating in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Provides group and individual supervision and mentoring of CPE students on assigned clinical units, during on-call periods, and during patient rounds, discharge planning, support groups, and other interprofessional teams.
  • Teaches and facilitates various CPE units/courses, prepares and leads seminars in pastoral care for CPE students.
  • Coordinates 24-hour on-call coverage by CPE students to ensure balanced spiritual care coverage and student learning.
  • Aids in the planning and implementation of department services and functions in collaboration with other department members.
  • Participates in the CPE admissions and hiring process, making final selections for CPE programs.
  • Recommends initiatives to meet/exceed department and organization targets for patient satisfaction measures.
  • Maintains ACPE accreditation of CPE programs, develops curriculum, supervises students' performance, ensures accuracy of documentation, consults with physicians and hospital leadership on quality and safety of services provided by CPE students, and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Manages time effectively, prioritizes tasks, and utilizes financial stewardship to achieve maximum results in a timely manner.
  • Participates in and plans various department and hospital-wide activities, such as worship services, I CARE values integration, accreditation readiness, bioethics, etc., and assists with special projects and hospital committees.
  • Continually develops competencies in facilitation/teaching skills, supervising, and leadership skills, and updates the My Development Plan on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in theological studies from an institution accredited by CHEA, or equivalency approved by APC, AAPC, NACC, NAJC, CASC, or SCA.
  • Experience as a professional chaplain preferred.
  • Chaplain - Clinical Pastoral Educator (ACPE) certification required.
  • Chaplain - Board Certified Chaplain (BCCI) certification preferred.

  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
  • Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
  • Strong computer knowledge and proficiency in operating various computer systems.
  • Independent work ability, effective handling of challenging/difficult interactions, patient care situations, and sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal and team player skills.
  • Adapts to multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Professional handling of confidential/sensitive information.
