About the role
The Educational Interpreter serves as a liaison to promote good public relations between the hearing impaired, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members. They adhere to guidelines outlined in the Registry for Interpreters of the Deaf Code of Ethics. The role involves adjusting interpretation to the level of language system of the student/client, interpreting classroom lectures, assignments, and demonstrations, voicing for the student/client as appropriate, and interpreting for special request situations related to school functions.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a liaison to promote good public relations between the hearing impaired, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members
- Adhere to guidelines outlined in the Registry for Interpreters of the Deaf Code of Ethics
- Adjust interpretation to the level of language system of the student/client
- Interpret classroom lectures, assignments, and demonstrations
- Voice for student/client as appropriate
- Interpret for special request situations related to school functions and assist in structuring a learning environment conducive to communication interactions
- Interpret student interaction and group discussion, as necessary, for effective communication
- Support and demonstrate core values of Stafford Schools
- Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to position
- Respond to written and oral requests for information promptly and thoroughly
- Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position
- Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality
- Work in close harmony with colleagues, supervisors, and co-workers
- Comply with all District and School policies and regulations, including but not limited to guidelines for confidentiality
- Perform other related duties as required/assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma, G.E.D., or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by courses and/or training in sign language and/or manually coded English
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and/or manually coded English
Qualifications
- Knowledge: Appropriate sign language vocabulary. Registry for Interpreters of the Deaf Code of Ethics.
- Skills: Basic reading, writing and computation skills. Ability to adjust interpretation to the level of language system of the student/client. Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals. Organize and perform work independently. Meet deadlines for all work even when working on multiple projects. Show sustained effort and enthusiasm in quality and quantity of work.

- Ability to identify colors visually. Ability to identify objects in low light or distant conditions. Ability to communicate via spoken language. Ability to communicate via written language. Ability to perceive sounds. Ability to make decisions using logic and rational thinking.
