About the role
Facilitate communication between students who are deaf/hard of hearing and those individuals involved in the educational process using sign language and other communication resources needed to accommodate hearing impaired students who are qualified to receive these services. Provide support to students who are deaf so that they can be independent and meaningfully participate in the activities of the school setting.
Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with students and school staff
- Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students and school staff
- Demonstrate ability to relate to the deaf/hard of hearing population
- Interpret information accurately, including class lectures, discussions, tests and other activities
- Participate in IEP meetings as requested by the teacher of the hearing impaired or as appropriate
- Prepare for assignments by becoming familiar with the lessons being introduced by the teachers
- Aid the teacher of the hearing impaired in sharing information about social, emotional and cultural aspects of the hearing impaired
- Aid the teacher of the hearing impaired with preparing, implementing and evaluating students’ Individual Education Plans
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Hold a valid Educational Interpreter License from the GA Professional Standards Commission
- OR Successful completion of the EIPA with a minimum score of 3.5 or higher
- OR Hold a valid certificate through the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID)
