Educational Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

About the role

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and to free certified professional employees from non-professional duties such as proctoring study halls to enable them to make a contribution to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• 48 college hours or two years of child-related work experience preferred
• Certification from the Registry of Interpreters of Deaf (RID) or Board of Educators Interpreters (BEI)
• One year of experience providing interpreting services or working with children
• No experience except work or internship experience interpreting for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, preferably in an educational environment, as required by certification

Skills

• Ability to interpret spoken material from English to sign language and sign language into a verbal communication
• Knowledge of interpretation and educational settings
• Knowledge of hearing loss and its implications on student learning
• Knowledge of adaptive equipment and communication and educational devices
• Ability to analyze communication in order to make adjustments and approaches to interpretation
• Ability to monitor and assess the interpretation during and after the task
• Ability to focus on a single source of auditory or visual information in the presence of other distracting sounds
• Ability to make quick sense of information even when parts of that information may be missing

Responsibilities

• Interpret for students in all formal educational settings where facilitation of communication is needed
• Sign and voice questions and answers by students and teachers
• Maintain confidentiality, discussing only major difficulties with the educational team responsible for the student's educational program
• Remain impartial, allowing students freedom to make choices and to learn as independently as possible
• Encourage independence of the student and interaction with his/her peer groups, teachers, and other campus staff
• Familiarize self with materials being taught and prepare for each assignment
• Position self-appropriately so student is able to view the Interpreter
• Be familiar with and follow the student's individualized education plan
• Participate in professional learning, faculty meetings, and special events as needed
• Comply with all RID code of professional conduct, campus, and district policies

Work Environment

Work is performed in classrooms, offices, conference rooms, labs, gymnasiums, outdoor playing fields, and other district facilities as required. May be required to work prolonged or irregular hours, frequent travel throughout the district, occasional statewide travel.
