If the position is not filled with a bargaining unit member, outside applicants will be considered thereafter until filled. Projected start date: approximately September 2, 2026. This is a temporary position for the 2026/2027 school year: 7 hours/day, 185 days/year.

About the role

The Educational Assistant - Middle School Media ensures the orderly operation and maintenance of the school media collection and provides library services to students and staff.

Pay

Salary range: $22.29 to $30.54/hour.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Highly Qualified Status (completed associate’s or higher degree, at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 college quarter hours or more), or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics)
  • Fingerprinting and criminal background check
  • Current First Aid/CPR card

Skills & Abilities

  • Perform basic clerical functions, basic arithmetic calculations, and operate standard office equipment
  • Use English in verbal and written form with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Understand principles of child development and instructional processes
  • Carry out oral and written instructions
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records, meet schedules and deadlines, and read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, and policies
  • Rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage circulation and collection using the automated system: add/delete patron records, back up data daily, add/delete materials, process materials, run reports, and keep an inventory of the collection
  • Monitor classes during media-center visits: check-in/check-out of materials, supervise study hall or teacher-assigned work, and supervise silent reading time
  • Process materials for library use: spine label, stamp, bar code, and enter into the system
  • Repair/mend library materials as needed
  • Assist students in the selection process and with other computer work
  • Train and supervise volunteers helping with media-center upkeep (e.g., shelving books)
  • Act as a representative of the media center: field calls from parents and sales representatives, work with parent clubs, and collaborate with the public library

Other Job Functions

  • Maintain general upkeep of the library
  • Set up space for classes and meetings held in the library
  • Gather collections for staff as requested
  • Notify staff and students of overdue materials in a timely manner
  • Process holds for students
  • Promote the library as needed (bookmarks, posters, etc.)
  • Make bookmarks as needed
  • Sort media mail and maintain a file of vendor catalogs
  • Keep a list of teacher/student requests for ordering purposes
  • Collect money and issue receipts for lost books; issue refunds if a book is found
  • Maintain bulletin boards and seasonal displays
  • Participate in lunch, recess, and dismissal duties as assigned by the principal
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assist with student transportation needs, including walking students to/from the bus and supervising loading/unloading

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods
  • Talk and hear conversations in a potentially noisy environment
  • Use precise control of fingers and hand movement (e.g., keyboarding)
  • Reach for and handle objects
  • Use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Focus on a computer screen
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and lift/move up to 40 pounds on occasion

  • Dress in a professional and appropriate manner for the assignment and work setting
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding information about students, staff, and parents
  • Exercise prudent judgment and work independently in the performance of routine duties
  • Follow all district policies, work procedures, federal, and state regulations
  • Participate in required meetings and trainings related to the position
  • If bilingual, interpretation, translating documents, and/or communicating orally in the second language may be requested
  • Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment
