About the Role

The Educational Assistant II assists in delivering instructional programs by helping the Teacher implement classroom activities, assess student progress, and reinforce instruction through small-group and individual exercises.

Reports to: Principal or Assistant Principal. Indirect supervision may also come from the Classroom Teacher or Building Secretary.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in implementing classroom learning exercises planned by the Teacher.
  • Oversees group activity in the classroom, including short periods of whole-class supervision.
  • Assists small groups or individuals with skill reinforcement or lesson assignments.
  • Presents teacher-designed subject matter to students through lectures, discussions, and supervised skill development.
  • Coordinates daily activities and instruction as directed.
  • Assists in proctoring student assessments and maintaining records (attendance, progress, grades, IEP, and PEP documents).
  • Measures student work against clear rubrics or answer keys.
  • Supervises students in playgrounds, cafeterias, bus stops, and hallways.
  • Assists in classroom setup and maintenance of materials/supplies.
  • Corrects student work and distributes instructional materials.
  • Confers with teaching staff or parents about student progress and behavior.
  • Assists in ordering, preparing, and administering instructional materials.
  • Prepares for IEP meetings and tracks IEP data.
  • Assists in behavioral management, including modeling appropriate behavior and responding to discipline issues.
  • Accompanies students on school bus routes, providing general supervision.
  • Performs clerical duties (word processing, phone coverage, record maintenance, public interface).
  • Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately.
  • Complies with District policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • One of the following:
    • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution.
    • Completion of two years of post-high school study.
    • Passing score on the District’s assessment of reading, writing, and math skills.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • General knowledge of English language arts and mathematics.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Working Conditions

The role primarily works in a school building (classroom, campus, and grounds). The incumbent must:

  • Stand, walk, and sit for long periods while observing multiple students.
  • Attend to individual student needs without leaving others unattended.
  • Walk quickly and assume various physical postures (pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching).
  • Possess dexterity to operate standard classroom equipment and sufficient eyesight to read materials/monitor students.
  • Work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Potential exposures include inclement weather, allergens, blood-borne pathogens, dirt, odors, dust, temperature extremes, and erratic student behavior.

Pay

$17.85–$21.46 per hour, depending on approved experience.

  • Longevity pay after 6 years of employment.
  • Annual COLA and step pay increases (as negotiated with OSEA).
