About the role

To support student learning by assisting licensed staff in curriculum and program implementation.

Schedule

  • 6.5 hours per day, Monday - Friday
  • 181 work days (limited-term contract)
  • Start date: as soon as possible

FLSA status: non-exempt (classified)

Pay

  • Rate: $21.25 per hour with benefits

Corvallis School District participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP) on behalf of its employees. Upon eligibility, the district contributes 6% of an employee's salary to their Individual Account Program (IAP). Eligibility is defined as working at least six full calendar months in a qualifying position. Part-time employees working at least six months and 600 hours in a calendar year will qualify.

Responsibilities

  • Exercises independent judgment in the management of classroom/program operations consistent with administrative direction, district policies, and instructional program goals.
  • Works effectively with and responds to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
  • Assists in the instruction of students in small group and one-on-one settings; adjusts lesson plans or teaching strategies during instructional activities as necessary to achieve learning goals under licensed staff supervision.
  • Provides supplemental practice in learning experiences, including drills and activities using strategies designed by licensed staff to reinforce or modify skills.
  • Prepares instructional materials from licensed staff, including copying materials, developing visual aids and charts, and collecting/distributing supplies and equipment.
  • Facilitates students in developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults; promotes student safety by helping them develop self-confidence.
  • Trains and assists students in behavior management and social skills; responds to discipline problems and acts as a role model.
  • Maintains high standards and expectations for students to encourage independent learning and personal growth.
  • Maintains, stores, and retrieves information accurately using standard office systems, equipment, and software.
  • Supervises student activities throughout the building, including outside the classroom and traditional instructional day (e.g., homework club, tutoring).
  • Assists licensed staff in training volunteers and professionals to work with students in support of the district educational plan.
  • Exercises independent judgment to resolve issues and respond to requests for assistance within specialized areas of assignment.
  • Performs minor medical and health procedures as requested, meeting state and district guidelines.
  • Provides other related services as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (or higher), two years of post-secondary study (72 quarter or 48 semester credits), or a passing score on a district-approved assessment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including communications to parents under the direction of licensed staff.
  • Interest in learning to use other communication systems effectively.
  • Ability to formulate ideas for program improvement.
  • Ability to collect, record, store, retrieve, assimilate, organize, and utilize information and records efficiently.
  • Ability to understand and implement student discipline policies and manage student behavior effectively.
  • Ability to work with challenging behaviors and creatively problem-solve difficult situations using intervention strategies.
  • Ability to understand and implement instructional goals and carry out work assignments in support of those goals.
  • Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals and groups of all ages.
  • Ability to independently organize and carry out work assignments, follow student schedules or individualized education plans, and direct the work of students and others.
  • Proficient in the use of classroom/program equipment and technology.
  • Ability to obtain specialized training as required.
  • Ability to travel among district facilities as needed; if driving, must meet district driving standards.
  • Standard First Aid certification, or ability to obtain certification within two months of hire, may be required.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Required to walk regularly (occasionally on uneven surfaces), occasionally sit, and reach with hands and arms (frequently reaching above the shoulder).
  • Required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must regularly lift, move, and/or carry up to 50 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 80 pounds; and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance.
  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

Work Environment

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally high.
