Educational Advisor II

Purpose of Position

Advise student veterans and connect them to campus and community resources. Responsible for understanding and interpreting the needs of student veterans in formulating and evaluating best practices in the service of the university military-connected student population.

Essential Functions

• Identification, recruitment, selection, and delivery of services to eligible participants from target community.
• Ensure improved participant academic performance (pre and post program assessment).
• Provide services to participants to aid in retention in program until they master skills and assistance needed to enter postsecondary education.
• Provide direct services such as career exploration, study skills improvement, and social skills building.
• Conduct workshops and activities to aid postsecondary participant preparation.
• Responsible for participant records including data entry and required forms completion.
• Assist with submission of documentation to governmental agencies as well as for grant proposals.
• Provide advisory service to student veterans as they transition to college life, including admissions, financial aid and benefits information.
• Meet individually with student veterans to provide guidance and support for academic and non-academic issues.
• Performs other duties assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an advisory, administrative, recruiting, or educational capacity with students.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience working within the U.S. military, veteran affairs, or military assistance programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience working a TRIO Pre-College federal program or similar program with students and parents who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Candidates must possess an understanding of veterans' educational benefits, veteran resources, and the educational needs of non-traditional student populations.
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proficiency with computers and other office equipment.
• Knowledge of academic, economic, social, and cultural needs of disadvantaged students.
• Experience in advising students toward entering a postsecondary education program.
• Knowledge of the college and financial aid application process.
• Experience assisting students with the college admissions and standardized test requirements.
• Bilingual in English/Spanish.
• Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers to those confronting the student population from which military veteran participants are selected.
• Experience coordinating and conducting educational presentations, workshops, and other individual/group activities for low-income and/or first-generation students.
• Strong, nonjudgmental and supportive interpersonal skills; strong planning and organizational ability, excellent documentation skills, and attention to detail; excellent verbal and written communication ability; knowledge of TABE 5A and TABE 6A, ACCUPLACER/PSAT/SAT/THEA/ACT test preparation.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm. Some local and national travel involved. Position funded through 9/31/2027.

Working Conditions

• May work around standard office conditions.
• Uses standard office equipment.
• 10% Travel.

Pay

The annual salary for this position ranges from $45,400 to $45,400.
