About the Role

This position allows you to make a significant impact on the lives of children who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple impairments. You will utilize detailed knowledge of the principles and methods of education, including all areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), to support these children. The role involves traveling statewide to deliver high-quality services in an encouraging, collaborative, and innovative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide education and support to children who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple impairments, using the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).
  • Travel statewide to deliver services and work as part of a dedicated team providing world-class educational and vocational services.
  • Make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.

Schedule

  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday
  • Work Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week
  • Work Shift: First shift, 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. (with a 45-minute lunch)
  • Location: 184 Windsor Ave, Windsor, CT (with statewide travel required)

About the Agency

The Department of Aging and Disability Services (ADS) aims to maximize opportunities for the independence and well-being of people with disabilities and older adults in Connecticut. Key focus areas include:

  • Delivering aging and disability services responsive to the needs of Connecticut citizens.
  • Providing leadership on aging and disability issues statewide.
  • Coordinating programs and services in employment, education, independent living, accessibility, and advocacy.
  • Advocating for the rights of residents with disabilities and older adults.
  • Serving as a state-level resource on aging and disability issues.

The Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind (BESB) is Connecticut’s leading bureau for coordinating and providing services to residents who are legally blind or have significant visual impairments. Services include:

  • Training and devices to help individuals function independently at home and in the community.
  • Teaching children how to adapt to and learn in environments designed for those with sight.
  • Providing services to help individuals find or retain employment after developing blindness.

Requirements

General Experience

  • Six (6) years of experience in teaching blind or visually handicapped adults.

Special Experience

  • One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in mobility instruction.

Substitutions Allowed

  • College training with special courses in the education of the blind may substitute for General Experience at a rate of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year, up to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.
  • A Master’s Degree in mobility training may substitute for both General and Special Experience.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience assessing and teaching Orientation and Mobility to students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Experience providing consultation to families of blind or visually impaired students.
  • Experience managing a caseload.
  • Experience providing consultation to education team members.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a certificate in Orientation and Mobility from a recognized national, state, or professional organization.
  • Incumbents may be required to travel.
