About the role
This position provides instructional assistance to certificated staff in academic instruction and language proficiency assessment of students identified as English learners. It also involves performing a variety of related services requiring English and Spanish.
Responsibilities
- Tutors students identified as English learners to improve their proficiency in English and their understanding of curriculum subjects.
- Affords assistance to assigned students with challenges related to school achievement as a result of language barriers.
- Promotes the well-being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude/self-image and ability to cooperate and interact with other students and adults.
- Supports classroom instruction by performing a variety of tasks that support classroom instruction.
- Consults with teachers on ways to better meet students' needs.
- Performs related tasks as required in program planning, implementation, and operation regarding assigned students.
- Serves as interpreter as needed.
- Translates correspondence to parents in English or Spanish.
- Administers oral language proficiency and academic assessments in English and Spanish to students.
- Transcribes oral answers into written form using state-and District-approved forms.
- Contacts school staff and parents to explain meaning of scores obtained.
- Tests students on a one-to-one basis.
- Verifies student cumulative record information.
- Posts, maintains, and updates student data.
- May travel from one work location to another, using personal transportation.
Requirements
Any combination of the following paid experience amounting to one year:
- Providing instructional assistance
- Interpreting or translating services in the English and Spanish language
-AND-
- High school graduation or the equivalent
- Completion of at least 48 semester units (or 72 quarter units) at the college level
- Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree
- Pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics
Qualifications
