About the role

This position provides instructional assistance to certificated staff in academic instruction and language proficiency assessment of students identified as English learners. It also involves performing a variety of related services requiring English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Tutors students identified as English learners to improve their proficiency in English and their understanding of curriculum subjects.
  • Affords assistance to assigned students with challenges related to school achievement as a result of language barriers.
  • Promotes the well-being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude/self-image and ability to cooperate and interact with other students and adults.
  • Supports classroom instruction by performing a variety of tasks that support classroom instruction.
  • Consults with teachers on ways to better meet students' needs.
  • Performs related tasks as required in program planning, implementation, and operation regarding assigned students.
  • Serves as interpreter as needed.
  • Translates correspondence to parents in English or Spanish.
  • Administers oral language proficiency and academic assessments in English and Spanish to students.
  • Transcribes oral answers into written form using state-and District-approved forms.
  • Contacts school staff and parents to explain meaning of scores obtained.
  • Tests students on a one-to-one basis.
  • Verifies student cumulative record information.
  • Posts, maintains, and updates student data.
  • May travel from one work location to another, using personal transportation.

Requirements

Any combination of the following paid experience amounting to one year:

  • Providing instructional assistance
  • Interpreting or translating services in the English and Spanish language

-AND-

  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Completion of at least 48 semester units (or 72 quarter units) at the college level
  • Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree
  • Pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics

Qualifications

  • An appropriate, valid California driver license.
