Job Description

The Emergency Department Tech/Unit Coordinator at UofL Health provides clinical patient care support in a caring, safe, and efficient manner, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Maintains patient records and ensures accuracy in hospital billing systems.
  • Coordinates patient admissions and discharges, ensuring proper documentation and signatures.
  • Operates and maintains medical equipment, including ventilators and mechanical lifts.
  • Performs various patient care tasks such as mobility, hygiene, and dressing changes.
  • Assists with patient transport, specimen collection, and emergency procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensures patient safety and adheres to infection control protocols.
  • Completes daily reports and updates patient files.

Essential Functions

  • Measures and documents intake and output, vital signs, and patient weights.
  • Monitors and documents patient safety measures, including restraint usage and safety checks.
  • Verifies patient registration and corrects errors in admission systems.
  • Performs patient hygiene, grooming, and dressing care, as well as skin and nail care.
  • Trains patients with orthopedic injuries in splint and crutch use.
  • Operates and safely uses medical equipment, including ventilators and mechanical lifts.
  • Collects and labels specimens for laboratory testing under RN supervision.
  • Performs routine electrocardiography (ECG) testing and assists with other diagnostic procedures.
  • Transcribes and enters physician orders into the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensures patient clothing and valuables are safeguarded.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel about equipment malfunctions and missing supplies.
  • Communicates with bio-medical engineering for equipment maintenance.
  • Provides orientation to new employees and assists with patient transfers.

Other Functions

  • Responds to emergencies and handles desk communications promptly.
  • Keeps track of equipment and supplies, notifying staff of any issues.
  • Communicates with physicians and other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and HIPAA regulations.
