Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Scientist-Technical Lead will assist the Laboratory Supervisor in maintaining laboratory standards according to accrediting bodies such as CAP, CDC, CLIA, FACHT, FDA, JCAHO, and HCFA. They will also perform technical reviews, validate new procedures, and ensure quality control.

Essential Functions

  • Submits feedback to the Laboratory Supervisor for technical evaluation of section employees (including initial competency and skills assessment/validation)
  • Performs direct observation and ensures competency for all department staff
  • Recommends and implements improvements necessary to achieve operational goals and improve patient outcomes
  • Maintains quality control and proficiency testing for department
  • Ensures accreditation standards are met for department in accordance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, AABB, FDA, OSHA, etc.
  • Demonstrates comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals and reviews them biannually, revising as necessary
  • Evaluates new technologies for the section in conjunction with the Medical Director of the department
  • Serves in a problem-solving role for the department
  • Aids in the orientation of new department employees as demonstrated by the completed orientation checklist in the employee's personnel file
  • Makes regular meetings with Laboratory Supervisor and section Medical Director to discuss capital purchases, operational, and technical issues

Shift Requirements

  • Shift Length: 8 hours
  • # of Shifts per Week: 5
  • Overtime Required: None

Other Functions

  • Identifies and reports any safety hazards or concerns
  • Maintains staffing for call-ins or other unusual circumstances
  • Maintains an adequate reagent and supply inventory in the department
  • Makes suggestions for improvements of procedures and workflow
  • Communicates to staff consistently
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

  • Appropriate Bachelor’s degree to meet CLIA certification standards for medical laboratory technician (required)
  • Two (2) years of hospital laboratory experience in section leading (required)
  • Previous experience with automated equipment in department supervising (preferred)

Certification

  • Medical Technologist certification (required)
  • MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW/HHS) (required)
  • Specialty certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology (SBB,SC,SH,SM, SCYM, SMB) (preferred)
