About the role

The Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role, phlebotomy, patient transport and 12-lead ECG tracings. Under the direct supervision of the RN, the technician supports the Emergency Department mission by participating in cost containment, maintaining a positive work environment, and adhering to policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Participation in cost containment development/maintenance of positive work environment minimizing overtime
  • Attending required classes and meetings
  • Participating in unit committees
  • Adhering to all policies and procedures
  • Promoting Patient Safety:
    • Applying protective devices correctly
    • Anticipating patient requests
    • Making rounds every hour as a minimum
    • Assisting RN in planning patient care
    • Maintaining a safe unit environment
  • Promoting Infection Control:
    • Washing hands before and after patient contact
    • Handling soiled linen, equipment, and instruments per protocol
    • Maintaining sterile asepsis
    • Changing and securing dressings
    • Maintaining isolation technique
  • Promoting Personal Safety:
    • Utilizing PPE appropriately
    • Keeping hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side
  • Provides Daily Inventory Maintenance:
    • Maintaining support areas (kitchen, nurses’ station, utility rooms)
    • Cleaning/stocking restocking equipment in patient rooms
    • Accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers, and other pertinent equipment
  • Completes Direct Patient Care:
    • Performing pulse oximetry, Foley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement, minicath – excludes children and infants
    • Completing selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording
    • Performing lab testing as appropriate
    • Providing care for patients requiring restraint or seclusion
    • Performing splint application (Methodist only)
    • Obtaining adequate lab specimens for testing
    • Performing patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control
    • Providing observation and measurement of patient information per policy
    • Maintaining a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions
    • Performing special procedures per policy
    • Performing direct patient care that significantly impacts patient satisfaction
  • Promotes Patient Wellness:
    • Maintaining a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered
    • Ready to monitor patient post-procedure
    • Absenteeism management
    • Assisting with in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort
    • Assisting with nutrition management
    • Assisting with elimination procedures

Qualifications

  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA); Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training within 3 months - Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)
  • Education: H.S. Diploma/GED
  • Work Experience: Hospital

Skills

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing
  • Practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions
