ED Tech (8P-8A)

Nemours Children's Health is seeking an ED Tech (EMT certification required) to join our team in Wilmington, DE.

About the role

This position assists with general activities of the Emergency Department and supports the health care team with patient care activities under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse. The schedule is 36 hours weekly, 7:45 PM to 8:15 AM, including every third weekend and 2 holidays per year (one summer and one winter). As an ED Tech, you will also respond to non-patient emergencies throughout the campus.

Responsibilities

• Continually assess patients according to the pediatric assessment triangle, noting changes in condition and recognizing immediate life threats.
• Assist the Rapid Assessment nurse with evaluating new patients, including taking vital signs, cleaning and dressing wounds, performing point-of-care testing (POCT), and assisting with medications or interventions.
• Assist with vehicle extraction of injured patients, including maintaining C-spine stabilization, splinting broken bones, and safely removing patients from vehicles.
• Room patients in the Emergency Department based on acuity and available areas after discussion with the Flow Supervisor.
• Report and document all changes and complications in patient flow to the Supervisor.
• Perform initial assessments for specific monitoring needs, such as cardiac monitors and/or pulse oximetry.
• Document all intake and output.
• Maintain communication with the RN regarding vital signs outside normal limits or any changes in patient status.
• Record accurate vitals based on patient acuity (e.g., Q15, Q30, Q45, Q1hr, Q2hr, Q4hr).
• Assist the healthcare team with procedures such as lumbar puncture, IV catheter insertion, laceration repairs, suctioning, urinary catheterization, and POCT.
• Perform EKGs, nasal washes, flu testing, visual acuity tests, phlebotomy (including stat lab testing such as bilirubin and newborn screen tests), and POCT for assigned patients (e.g., urinalysis, rapid strep test, gastro/hemoccult, HCG test, glucose test).
• Transport patients to inpatient units, radiology, MRI, operating room, ECG, ultrasound, PICU, NICU, and multiple clinics while monitoring patients on oxygen, pulse oximeters, or cardiac monitors.
• Respond to "Stat Responses" in the Emergency Department and initiate/continue CPR for patients in cardiac arrest.
• Respond to all "Code Blues" on the first and ground floors with a stretcher, EMS bag, AED, and prepared to begin resuscitation on scene.
• Function in Trauma Codes and Alerts: remove patient clothes, apply cardiac leads and pulse oximetry, hold C-spine stabilization, obtain vital signs, assist with rolling patients, perform CPR, and restock trauma supplies.
• Apply medical devices such as cast shoes, non-articulating boots, knee immobilizers, slings, C-collars, Miami J collars, trauma collars, and wrist splints.
• Fit and teach patients to use crutches.
• Assist Orthopedic Residents in fracture reductions during conscious sedation, splinting, and casting.
• Stock supplies and maintain equipment within the Emergency Department, including linens for EMS and IV trays.
• Maintain assigned zone’s par stock, linens, and supplies.
• Complete task cards and ensure the stat response stretcher is functional.
• Provide 1:1 monitoring for patients with psychiatric concerns, conducting visual assessments every 5 minutes.
• Perform additional miscellaneous duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Specialized training (1 year beyond high school).
• American Heart Association BLS certification (required upon hire).
• Delaware EMT certification (required upon hire).
• PEARS certification (obtained upon hire).
• Minimum of 6 months of experience.
