Responsibilities
- Registers patients for hospital services from a physician’s office and pre-admits these patients as needed.
- Admits requirements for patients scheduled for admissions and outpatient procedures, obtains authorization and verifies insurance eligibility.
- Interviews patients or their representative, obtaining personal information or verifying information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information.
- Provides information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, and HIPAA.
- Distributes hospital specific literature.
- Collects payments, records payment, and forwards to the Business Office personnel when previous arrangements have been made or a co-payment is required.
- Knows hospital policies and is familiar with hospital services that are available.
- Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and the ability to function well in stressful situations.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures confidentiality of patients’ records.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
- Maintains good working relationships both within the department and with other departments.
- Safeguards documentation to meet current standards and policies.
- Answers the telephone in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family member.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Patient Access Supervisor.
Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Prefers someone with at least 6 months experience in a medical office or hospital setting.
BASIC SKILLS
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Able to type accurately with speed.
- Able to use office machines efficiently.
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional language a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift 40lbs.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, or sit for long periods of time.
