ED Psych Assessment Specialist-Weekend Days

About the role

This role is part of Carilion Clinic, a not-for-profit, mission-driven health system built on progress and partnerships. The ED Psych Assessment Specialist provides services to patients with mental health complaints from adolescents through advanced adulthood in an emergency department setting. Services include initial assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and psychosocial assessments. The role involves close collaboration with healthcare teams, community resources, and regulatory agencies to facilitate patient transitions from the ED to the next continuum of care, while serving as a patient advocate.

Responsibilities

• Provides assessment, consultation, and referral services to individuals who are self-referred or referred by physicians, counselors, agencies, and other referral services.
• Coordinates and facilitates treatment/referral recommendations with psychiatrists and other physicians when medical issues must be considered in placement and treatment planning.
• Documents all pertinent intake information in the electronic medical record and Doc to Doc.
• Establishes and maintains positive and professional communication with internal and external providers and caregivers.
• Utilizes effective communication skills in a team environment and demonstrates excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills.
• Receives and screens incoming calls via a multi-line system.
• Coordinates patient admissions internally and externally by serving as a liaison between Emergency Psychiatry Triage services, physician and nursing teams, mental health professionals, community services, and family members as appropriate.
• Follows up on all referral inquiries requiring further information or action regarding intake or admission procedures.
• Maintains current knowledge of the civil commitment process and coordinates involuntary admissions with the local Community Services Board Crisis Service when indicated.
• Identifies and accesses external community resources to support patient needs.
• Operates specialized software programs and computer systems including bed board, Tele-tracking, web x-change, Epic, and Outlook.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or a related field.
• One to three years of related experience.
• BLS certification.
• Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to complete orientation and competency validation successfully.
• Crisis intervention skills, cultural competence, integrity, and courteous disposition.
• De-escalation training must be completed within four months of hire and maintained thereafter.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Pay

$25.77 – $38.66 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
