ED Crisis Clinician

About the role

The ED Crisis Clinician is a licensed mental health professional who provides essential front-line support within the Emergency Department. Working independently in a fast-paced clinical environment, the clinician delivers immediate crisis assessment, intervention, and short-term therapeutic support to individuals and families experiencing mental health emergencies.

All services are delivered through a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and patient-centered lens. In addition to direct clinical care, the ED Crisis Clinician serves as a key resource to the interdisciplinary team, offering consultation on the psychosocial dimensions of patient care. This role is vital in fostering a collaborative, responsive, and compassionate care environment aligned with the organization’s mission and values.

Responsibilities

• Perform clinical assessments and risk evaluations, including assessing lethality and risk in patients presenting with suicidal or homicidal ideation
• Synthesize psychological, medical, and social data to formulate DSM-5-TR diagnoses and determine level of care
• Develop clear, clinically-sound crisis interventions and disposition plans
• Provide consultation on psychosocial dimensions of patient care to the interdisciplinary team
• Adhere to legal and ethical standards, including HIPAA, informed consent, mandated reporting, and psychiatric hold criteria
• Collaborate efficiently within ED workflows and manage multiple urgent clinical situations
• Evaluate and support individuals with substance use disorders, including dual-diagnosis presentations
• Deliver culturally responsive and trauma-informed care
• Engage effectively with patients, families, clinical teams, and community partners
• Document proficiently in electronic health records
• Navigate county, state, and federal regulations, including civil commitment processes and protective services protocols
• Identify and connect patients to appropriate community resources, including housing, mental health, and substance use treatment

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or other mental health profession
• 2 or more years of clinical experience in a mental health setting
• Licensed as one of the following in Minnesota:
  • Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) – MN Board of Social Work
  • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) – MN Board of Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) – MN Board of Behavioral Health & Therapy
  • Licensed Psychologist (LP) – MN Board of Psychology

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct clinical experience in an Emergency Department or hospital setting
• One or more years in mental health crisis intervention

• Knowledge of legal and ethical standards (HIPAA, mandated reporting, psychiatric hold criteria)
• Emergency Department collaboration and workflow management
• Substance use and co-occurring disorder evaluation and support
• Cultural humility and trauma-informed practice
• Strong verbal and written communication
• Electronic health record documentation
• Regulatory and systems knowledge (civil commitment, protective services, healthcare access)
• Knowledge of community resources and support systems

Schedule

Rotating days/evenings and every other weekend with the occasional holiday.
