Echocardiographer

About the role

UPMC Western Maryland is seeking an Echocardiography Sonographer to perform imaging procedures at a technical level that does not require constant supervision. You will competently perform various technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and the ability to recognize critical pathologies.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates the ability to communicate instructions to patients clearly and concisely, explaining procedures to allay fears and solicit cooperation.
• Identifies all patients properly according to policy.
• Reviews patient history and assesses physician orders, applying specific departmental protocols for optimal data acquisition.
• Documents patient history in the electronic record as required.
• Utilizes appropriate ultrasound instrumentation for procedures, demonstrating knowledge of equipment operations, applications, and scanning techniques to optimize image data.
• Interacts with patients and co-workers with a high level of caring, listening, dignity, and respect.
• Works as a team member within the department and across other departments to expedite patient care efficiently.
• Ensures all completed exams are properly coded and identified for electronic processing and storage according to department standards.
• Assures charges are adequately entered for the exams performed.
• Performs Cardiac Ultrasound procedures according to guidelines established by the Medical Director within the established time frame and protocol, including:
  • Transthoracic Echocardiography
  • Transesophageal Echocardiography
  • Stress Echocardiography
  • Echo with contrast
• Conducts himself/herself in accordance with system-wide and departmental values, policies, and procedures.
• Demonstrates the ability to function independently within a reasonable timeframe, covering off shifts, on-call responsibilities, and performing services at satellite facilities while communicating with the lead and management team.
• Assists physicians with invasive procedures as necessary and adheres strictly to universal protocol standards.
• Obtains appropriate echocardiographic images according to department policy and industry standards, including:
  • M-Mode
  • 2D
  • Doppler
  • Color Flow Doppler
  • Transesophageal echo
  • Echo enhancement
  • Bubble and contrast studies
  • Stress echocardiography

Requirements

• Completion of formal training in an accredited ultrasound program or professional equivalent required.
• Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Completion of formal training in an Ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • RDCS, RCS, or RDMS registered or registry eligible preferred.
  • Completion of the Physics portion of the registry preferred.
  • Must obtain RDCS or RDMS within 12 months of hire date.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).

Schedule

This is a full-time, 40-hour/week, day shift position that includes weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations.
