About the role

Set up automatic or semi-automatic machines or process lines within allotted time. Operate machines, verify parts meet blueprint specifications, and maintain production quality and safety standards. Works under moderate to little supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Operate multiple types of manual or semi-automatic machines and perform set-ups using drawings, checking specifications, and completing set-ups within strict time restraints.
  • Input simple data into computerized production machinery (does not program computer).
  • Monitor automatic machines or process lines and understand all control functions.
  • Verify parts meet blueprint specifications and are usable for the next operation.
  • Produce to and exceed established production and quality standards; conduct sophisticated quality inspections.
  • Measure for tolerance and quality check; complete inspection sheets.
  • Perform major adjustments to set-ups as needed for quality product.
  • Perform preventive, minor, and major maintenance to production machinery on a regular routine basis.
  • Keep work areas clean and orderly; conduct all work in a safe manner following established safety standards.
  • Read specified measuring instruments including tape measure, micrometer, etc.
  • Receive team and continuous process improvement training; participate on project teams as required.
  • Perform necessary rework and minor repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; may participate on project teams as requested.

Requirements

  • One-year experience as a Class 1 or Class 2 Operator and/or on-the-job apprenticeship with an experienced Class Three Machine Operator.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak simple sentences and communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Math skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals); ability to read a tape measure.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to stand and walk.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Medium heavy lifting: 80 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects up to 40 lbs. (67–100% of the time).
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Firm grasping: ability to exert sufficient grip (45–60 lbs. on a hand dynamometer) to pick up objects like a case of soft drinks or a bowling ball.
  • Fine manipulation of hands/fingers: sufficient coordination to place and screw a small washer on a bolt or pick up a dime off a countertop.
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment

  • Frequently works near and/or with moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Required to stand on a concrete floor for extended periods.
  • May be subject to extreme temperatures as plant production areas are not air-conditioned.
